fozzy58uk Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 If the cambodian border is closed, does anyone have any opinions on the best place/way for a border run. Shortest land journey or cheapest flight info would be greatly appreciated.
sweetchariot Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Depends where you are going from. Can't see the border closing anytime soon, unless a few more Thai soldiers step on landmines.

Join trips to go Vientiane for 2x TR but stay away from the Thai embassy. I think the operator will be most wllling to offer a discount. As for Myanmar, you've to find your own way there. At the moment no border run operators heading to Myanmar yet.
fozzy58uk Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 I'll be travelling from Bangkok. I only need to cross a border to activate my 2nd entry on x2 entry visa. Laos seems a bit far. Any more info on how to cross into Myanmar.
Mario2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I know only Mae Sod. That is also about 8 hours from Bangkok, with day and night busses leaving from Mo Chit. You could check if there still is a plane to Mae Sod.

Any more info on how to cross into Myanmar. Thailand shares border with Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. I'm afraid these are the only options. If 8 hours is too long, you can fly to Udon Thani and cross the border.
TCA Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Slightly fed up with long bus journeys so planning on splashing out on a flight (from Bangkok) on my next run. Been checking around to see what is the cheapest/quickest flight and back to anywhere not requiring a visa (for UK passport holders). Best I can do is Singapore with Air Asia for a shade over 5,000 baht - depart BKK at 16:45 and return just after midnight 00:10 - I can cope with less than 3 hours in the comfortable Changi Airport. KL with the same company looks another possibility if the price is right for when you need to go. Obviously availability is a factor for pricing but does anyone do anything similar that's as good in terms of flight times i.e same day return avoiding an overnight stay? Airline and destination?

Malaysia also borders Thailand - free visa on arrival for most nationalities apart from: The citizens of Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Angola, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo Republic, Cote D'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Western Sahara, Taiwan, Laisser Passer holders, Certificate of Identity Holders and Titre De Voyage must obtain a Malaysia visa before entry to Malaysia. Citizens of Israel and Yugoslavia are required to apply for Special Approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs before entering Malaysia.

dotcom Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I think you are overeacting. If any border crossing closes you'll hear it here first. Otherwise business as usual. Don't most people go to Poipet? O Yeah we could help you better if we know where you live.
Jimjim Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 As for Myanmar, you've to find your own way there. At the moment no border run operators heading to Myanmar yet. Yes there are. Have been runs going for a long time to Ranong in Southern Thailand. Cheaper than Cambodia visa and takes only half the page instead of whole page. Longer trip from Bangkok, however.
sniffdog Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Called JackGolf yesterday about this Friday .... no problems at the moment and none expected.
j0rd Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 PoiPet is a bit of a hole (read talesofasia.com for full details on land crossing into cambodia), but you can take a 3rd class train there for like 60 THB. Otherwise a first class bus for 270 THB (which is very comfortable and includes a meal). You can also book the whole Visa run return trip to PoiPet. Cambodia sounds a bit shaky to me at the moment though. So do your research. If you want to fly Airasia Macau is usually the cheapest. If you want take a ferry into hongkong for a small trip. This was booked on AirAsia China to get the promo costs. NanLaew Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I thought that visa dodgers had to stay outside LOS for minimum of 24-hours?
lopburi3 Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 Many of these people have visas and no they do not need to stay out of Thailand for any period of time.
oldbill Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 Hi I am going to be in Surin in a couple of weeks and was planning to go down to Chom Chom market and possibly cross into Cambodia. I haven't seen much on the news recently is it now not advised to cross? Thanks
sundaram444 Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 HiI am going to be in Surin in a couple of weeks and was planning to go down to Chom Chom market and possibly cross into Cambodia. I haven't seen much on the news recently is it now not advised to cross? Thanks Hi I got my re-entry permit on 20-07 crossing the border at Choeng Chom. It took me about 40 min to fill the applications at Cambodia border , then return and get all stamps done etc. It cost me : 1200 B for Visa to Cambodia and 300B for the short stay . And of course tips to the guys hanging around me- about 150 B. I did not notice anything unusual there. -sundaram444
MarK Siegel Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I am in Cambodia now inspecting some golf courses and hotels. Everything is running normally, including the border crossing. Mark Siegel

Mark Siegel thank you sir!! i need to make a border run soon and this thread had me worried. can anybody provide some quick cliffs notes on what happened and why there was any confusion in the first place?
Wombat6 Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Ranong in South West Thailand is an option. There are daily buses from the Southern Bus Terminal ex Bangkok or an Air Asia flight 3 times a week. There is a Thai immigration Office at the Andaman Club Pier and a 15 minute boat ride to the Andaman Club in Myanmar. If you don't want to go up to the club, Myanmar Immigration is at the Pier. Walk in, get it stamped in and out and get on the return boat ride...takes 10 minutes. Cost 850 Baht for boat and Visa fees. An alternative is to go to Immigration Office near the fishing Port, get stamped out and take a boat (many long tails available at Port) and travel to Victoria Point in Myanmar...about 20 mins...Myanmar Immigration and Thai on outward Journey. Myanmar Immigration on Vic Point Pier to get stamped out for return to Thailand Immigration office Cost of boat negotiable from 200 Baht return and U.S.$ 10 or baht acceptable for Visa.Boatman will do whats necessary with immigration for you on way to Myanmar. Many Hotels for overnight accom in Ranong from 100 Baht a night.

fozzy58uk Posted July 29, 2008 Author Posted July 29, 2008 Looks like it's still good to go. Thanks to all who posted relevant information. No thanks to the guy who inferred that people doing legal visa runs were visa dodgers.
dotcom Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Is the Cambo border closed? You are onto a scoop. Seriously this is big news.
