I am interested in buying a Volvo 850 GLT, 1996 up. Anyone who has one on offer up to 250K, please contact me. Here is the one I missed by 2 hrs for 200K on 1-2-car, Dark colors (pref grey, black, red) and a cream interior are essential. I will even consider a station wagon only if its a T5.

Cheers

So you decided a car would be nice in BKK after all, good choice of car as well. I have seen a few for sale on the classified board here, so perhaps have a search and see if they are still for sale.

Edit: Oh and when buying an older euro car here, be prepared to pay up to 50,000 baht over the next year to get it in top mechanical condition.

Posted

Thanks I have checked the classifieds here but only a wagon and a bit over price. 50K I think is a generous estimate given the condition of some I have seen of late...lol... this is why I will start at 200K and hopefully get it the way I like it by 300 :o The car will hardly be used, still into BTS and MRT, bike if needed, just the odd run to Mum's in Nakhon Pathom and a holiday every now and then. Its more a toy for me to play with :D

A quick search of another car site produced these 2

The red one is 1995 and B210,000

The Dark Grey/Black one is 1996 and B255,000

Unfortunately I cannot give you the URL for the site as apparently it's not allowed here on TV.

Oz,

The maroon car has a cream interior.

Shame about the wheels though.

In the case of a big old Volvo, you might need 50,000 baht put aside just for your first few visits to the pumps! :o

Are you considering running her on LPG or NGV - when you find her that is?

And may i ask why the 850?

Posted

Rixalex,

The decision has been made already for a NGV conversion on it. This will be my 7th Volvo and by far I prefer the 850 over most.

Since you asked..... The first 850 model built in 1993 was the firt attempt Volvo made at a FWD vehicle, they over powered it, so much so that European Police bought them for patrol cars. They tamed them down from 1995 on, but they are still a good power house if you know what to do with them. They in my opinion are also the last 'true' Volvo, now being no more than a Ford design with a Volvo badge and price to go with it, I like boxes. The car was the first to pioneer the SIPS system, and a great deal of the safety features that are not even standard on some cars today. They handle well on the road, are handsome I think, able to be dressed up for the Hilton or fitted out for the drag strip, not many cars can pull both off. The engine is easily maintained compared to newer models, where you hand over your check book at the service center door and pray! Having said this, the minus points I have found with all of my previous 850's were, AC problems, dark interior is too hot and depressing and the station wagon handles like a bus, thus looking for another sedan.

Thanks Oz - that was interesting reading. Volvo is one of the brands I don't know much about, and their model line up has always confused me somewhat. For example, what's the difference between 750 and 850?

The forum sponsor has what looks to be a nice example of an 1998 S90 for 250k. Don't know how the S90 differs from the 850 but it does look pretty boxy and Volvoish. A worry for me would be the 3 litre engine in the thing though. Is the S90 from the Ford era?

P.S. Is that our friend The Don spin-kicking a Volvo?

Posted

A long time ago it was easy to figure out Volvo,

The first number in the model designted the series 1,2,4,7,8,9

The second number was the cylinders in the engine 4 6 etc.

The last number being the amount of doors the car had, 4 sedan 5 wagon

Each of them having also had 3-4 grades which is the letters after the 850 (eg GL) the best (leather, all things that open & shut being the GLT or T5 (racing version))

ex 245 GLT Series 2, 4 cyl, 5 door wagon. GLT means you get all the top options.

They eventually gave up on the last door denominating digit and just chuck 0 in there in a lot of countries, and it became a mess, Volvo was trying to re-invent itself and losing

These days they have substituted the last two digits in the models for the series, SO, a S90 simply means a Sedan based upon the 9 series engine 3 or 4 lt. S70 Sedan based on the 7 Series engine.

The models for the 7 and 8 and 9 were all produced at the same time, the new naming happened around 1998?? when they all became

V70 (wagon), S70(sedan), C70 (coupe)

S80, and S90

XC70, XC90 (X=Cross Country, urban cowboy 4WD's)

You can take this generally as the finish of 'true' Volvo in my books, others will disagree.

Hope that helps... clear as mud now? Oh, and the side kick is me, but I'm sure TheDon will take credit for it...lol

thairookie.

I have owned a C70, which is the coupe version of the S70. Although I loved the car, I am a tinkerer, and there is not mch that can be done with this car yourself. Also it has gone the way of most auto makers, if you want a window switch replaced, you have to buy half the door as all the components are not available separately, so for the sake of a 1cent spring you fork over 2G, not my idea of fun, then the electronics have to be calibrated again by Volvo at $75 and hour etc... Attached a pic of my 750, don't laugh at the hair, much boxier, I definitely love the exterior but the interior is a bit spartan, and they are getting to the end of their days unless they were extremely well maintained. The 850 on the other hand was used here in Thailand extensively as airport 'limousines' and such so there is a plethora of them and heaps of spares and techs that can fix them.

The early C70 was not sold here in Thailand so I cannot get one, if I could that would be my first choice. see my C70 pic.

Your C70 looks gorgeous - just about the best looking Volvo i've ever seen.

Thanks for the explanation on the Volvo range. Must admit i'm still a bit confused though. :o One of the reasons i was always put off by Volvo was simply not being able to understand what the models were. You'd think that giving a car a name shouldn't be such a complicated process!

Do i understand correctly that the 750, 850 and 950 were all different models, presumably getting bigger from the 7 to the 9 then? As i recall though, to my untrained eye, all the 750s, 850s and 950s i saw looked the same.

And as for the hair... hmm.. you seem to be an all or nothing sort of guy in that department... lol.. luckily your taste in cars seems all the more sensible!

Lets see if I can clear it up or confuse you..

Series 1 had 144 164 both 4 and 6 cyclinder engines

Series 2 had the 244 & 264 both 4 and 6 cyclinder engines

Series 3 had the 340 & 360 both 4 and 6 cyclinder engines

Series 4 had the 440 & 460 both 4 and 6 cyclinder engines

Series 7 had the 740 & 760 both 4 and 6 cyclinder engines

Series 8 had the 850 New 5 cylinder FWD engine 2.3lt

Series 9 had the 940 & 960 both 4 and 6 cyclinder engines

S40 Made by Mitsubishi, 2.0lt, also had a V40 wagon

S70 Used 8 Series engine, 2.3lt with or withour Turbo, came in a V70 (wagon) or limited edition C70 (coupe)

S80 2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.9, 3lt Engines replaced the 960 and now the S90

S90 same same

The model history and time lines are here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_PV444/544 It also explains why there was no 5 series, but who knows what happened to 6??

Honda used to names their cars after a Music theme, Accord, Jazz, Beat (my fav), Ballade, Concerto, Prelude etc... Until they got confused as well.... too many owners, too many cooks and too many new starts.....

With the hair.. all or nothing, that made me chuckle, yep.... go hard or go home!!

I loved my C70, they were a limited custom order only model, the second time only Volvo made a coupe. The first being the P1800 which was used in the TV Series with Roger Moore 'The Saint', so they released a new coupe model with the launch of the remake of the movie with Val Kilmer. The convertible was a failure, shakes to bits, but the coupe, its a dream! The new one, a Ford in Volvo Badging IMHO.

You missed out the 480 and 780, probably the nicest two ever made, the 7 turned in the 9 for now apparent reason as they just refreshed the looks

I've seen some 480's over here, but never in Japan or Oz, so don't know alot about them. Nor the 780...perhaps you could explain about your experience with them, I'd love to hear, as you may tell I am a Volvo nut.. could talk about them all day...

R U Confused.......... So the 850... The 850 provides a choice of seven different model specifications

Just on the engine.. ALL are 5 cylinder petrol models

1984cc = 143bhp 20valve

2319cc = 168bhp 10valve

2435cc = 170bhp 20valve called the 2.5

2319cc = 225bhp 20valve called the Turbo

2319cc = 250bhp 20valve called the 'R' this the UK Police used

2319cc = 240bhp 20valve called the Estate/Van....... also had then in both Turbo & Racing

Also there was the The 850 AWD 2.5 Iitre 20 valve petrol engine, and the refined TDI, 140bhp

Then there is the trim. Gl.. GLE... GLT

mostly the quick and easy way to tell is the seats

GL = cloth

GLE = 1/2 Leather

GLT = full leather + electric seats

both the 'T' and 'R' version are the top trim,

Of course the 1st owner could have ordered the GLT interior in the GL or GLE...

Posted

Hi :o

As an owner of a '94 460 GLE i can with 100% accuracy say that there was NOT a six-cylinder version of this one :D In Europe they sold this from 1.4 up to 2.0, including a 1.7 Turbo and a 1.6 Diesel.

In Thailand you only get the 2.0.

But ALL of them are 4-cylinder. And NONE of them is actually a Volvo! Developed and built by DAF (Netherlands) using a French (Renault) chassis and engine including all electrics plus a Volvo body and badge (including the SIPS!) these are a headache to maintain here in Thailand as even the smallest spare part has to be imported, there are zero after-market parts available and the electrics are Renault-typical - faulty all over, that is.

The 460 is, basically, a Renault 19 with a Swedish-designed body, made in The Netherlands. The 440 is the same with a different body style.

Best regards.....

Thanks for the explanation, but despite your best efforts, i'm still struggling with this. I must be really thick!

If we take Peuguot as an example, the 107, 207, 307, 407 and 607, are all different models and they get progressively bigger. Or BMW have from 1 series to 7, each bigger than the one before.

Where i'm confused with Volvo is that the 750, 850 and 950 (or if you want to call 7, 8 and 9 series) all look to me to be the same shape and sized car?! So are they the same class car but just with different engine specs?

Hoping for Volvo enlightenment....

Robbing gits!

I drive a 940 estate ( with 3 gsd's you need to) her in the uk and I run them until they drop, cost me £ 750 over a year ago and still runs like a dream, forget the auto box, they are great to drive but my last 940 was an auto ( only cost me £350

and lasted 18 months!) and they wanted £1000 to fit a recon gearbox.

Gave my mate a lift to essex today to pick up a lovely 2tr 940, 2 previous owners 123k on the clock, 12 month mot 3 months tax full service history the inside dont look lie anyone has ever sat in it! Body and work was spot on apart from a small dink on the roof opening panel.

The price? £650....., the import tax on cars into LOS is nothing shot of robbery.

Good hunting with the car

I thought there may have been some generation 1 C70's snuck through, since they are so good looking. But I will never buy a cabriolet, if you look up 'body shake' in the dictionary, there is a picture of the C70!! Seriously. The coupe was the one to get! My soft top is a Honda Beat.... another fun car. The new C70's are for sale for sure, but again not my cup of tea, Fords really, at least they apparently fixed the shakes though.

Myself been looking around the tents for a couple of weeks....

I have a 6 week old Isuzu D-Max Gold Series, the old D-Max 4year old lost 198,000 baht ! [with over 350,000km on the clock]

I also have a top model Honda Jazz, its 4 yrs old next month so looking to exchange, the same model/spec at the tents are selling for 80 - 100,000 less that they cost 4 years ago Brand New ! [most cars in the UK lose that much the day you drive them out of the showroom]

As an avid (rabid) Saab enthusiast, I was just a little peeved at what I saw going on at the time, esp given that the owner of the car is a friend of mine and all of our cars are usually sold within the "group" and rarely are the good ones sold to "outsiders" - the main reason for that is that we've loved these cars and don't want to let them go to somebody who will not look after it or just look at it as a cheap car or flip it to make a profit...

I've nothing against making a buck, I'm guilty on all counts of making money. I just have an unwavering love for SAABs, that's all.

I didn't really mean to offend, INTJ, I was just pissed that day. I apologize. SAAB guys are kinda weird. :o

edit: ok fine you were looking to make like 10k baht, but that Volvo dude is looking to ass-rape somebody. That car he's selling is worth 250 and he's selling for 450? so you may be right, he may require an outing! :D

Am i correct in my understanding that the Volvo 850 Turbo that's being sold by the forum sponsor for 450k used to belong to your friend? I thought that most of those cars were simply being advertised on that site on behalf of the owners to help them sell, and not that they were owned by the forum sponsor.

If your friend did sell his car to the forum sponsor, may i ask why he didn't try to sell it privately himself and just how much exactly did he receive?

Sorry if i was unclear, rix: The 850 is did NOT belong to my friend. I have no association with the 850. It was another car that INTJ had that used to belong to my friend, and that story was long ago between me and INTJ :D, so it may confuse those who are reading this thread.

Re: the forum sponsor. I know when they started out, they were selling expat only cars to expats only (and selling Fortuners). That was the attraction, under the assumption that an expat "trusts" another expat when it comes to buying his car (who knows if this is a reasonable assumption - i know some pretty shady expats).

Now it seems that the forum sponsor is selling more "Thai-owned" cars, which could be friends of friends, etc., but to me it kinda looks like they are headed to the "tent" side of used cars rather than the "specialty" thing they had going on before. Member Terdsak is/was the owner I think, maybe he can clarify, but he hasn't posted in a long time.
