Anyway, I had retirement savings, two pensions, and a small inheritance ........

Hmmm. So will you marry me ?

The last time I married somebody, I made her pregnant nine times. I'll pass, thanks. Besides, I already have at least one Thai boyfriend. :D

am i right to assume that pregnancies are not planned? :o

Right as usual, Naam. I think immaculate conceptions are also a bit out of style, as well.

500,000GBP at 42 on the basis i will live for another 30 odd yrs is 15,000 GBP a year, more then enough to survive.

would gbp be around when you're 42? :o

So nobody wants to answer the question?

13 million baht. It's not really enough but if I live another ten years I get USA social security. I am a risk taker and don't think most people could handle the risks I take.

Follow your bliss and let money flow into your life freely and unencombered.

Why do you lot keep talking about bringing this many dollars, pounds here spending so many dollars pounds on this and that?

Its irrelevant. Here in thailand they spend baht not GBP USD.

Folks, i know this is a particular dodgy question but when you decided to make Thailand your full-time home, how much money did you have to do it??? I dont need the exact figure, just round it up :o

And, from thinking about making the leap to actually getting on the plane and doing it....how long???

No, i dont work for the Inland Revenue!!!!!! Just trying to work everything out and decide on timescales etc.

GO FOR IT...................

Impossible to answer - to many variables involved: does one work, what kind of lifestyle do you want to life, are you going to rent or buy, are you going to have a family or not ... and on and on it goes.

Without defining or those "money eating" considierations it's impossible to work out what is needed to stay here.

The question is NOT impossible to answer. More like you don't want to answer. Understandable. People are more private about money than sex these days.

We plan on bringing a few million baht start up money but plan on working as we are both well under retirement age.

Add to that a bit more an offshore account where we can use the interest if we need to, (the capital is my back up fund for myself & son in case things go tits up for whetever reason) & my husbands farming concerns to add a little extra cash yearly, we wont have too much but enough for our needs.

Both of us qualify for state UK pensions (should it exist when we get that old) & we both have what has been contributed so far to private UK pension funds, I also plan on starting another private pension for us in thailand too. We dont plan to retire but with our savings, offshore money, business &farming earnings our life will be comfortable (as it is now)

But fortunatly, we both have the right to go back to the UK (my husband is naturlised Uk citizen) anytime we need for a cash injection or if things changed (politically) & we would never ever burn our bridges to get to Thailand.

absolute numbers in my case are irrelevant Jingthing. but as you seem to be interested here's a hint. i spent for my house (the one in Pattaya to which invited you last year) about double the amount what you stated to have saved before moving to Thailand. satisfied? if not, PM me and i reveal more details.

Just under 70,000 baht is what I had. :o

That should last about a month if you're careful.

I am taking a bit over 5 million baht, I got plans, fingers crossed and hope it all works out, if not, thats life

If it runs out, just ask your wife's dad for some more.

I arrived at 26 yrs old with 10k Sterling and blew the lot in 6 months. I had no plans on staying, it just sort of happened.

Pretty much always worked since and am now living a modest yet fairly comfortable life at 34 years old. (I'd still like a whole load more money though).

Enough to buy a condo on Suk

shouldve saved more so I could have bought another one by the beach as a vacation home.

Brought a few thousand baht cash, plus ATM/Visa cards to see me thru until pay day, and left the rest outside Thailand.

Took a few weeks to make the decision. Was actually hoping to find something in Singapore but nothing came up, so I chose here in preference to some of the other countries: mainly based on I liked the sound of the company, it sounded like a good job and it was close to Singapore... :o

Came for 2 years, and a decade or so later, after a few comings and goings, have a wife and kids, with about 30% of my money here...based largely on keeping in country what I've earned here... :D

Ahhh! But Lancelot, your strategy is to leave your capital intact so can leave it to..... whoever.

What about those who might want to piss it away over, say, 25 years - do you have a formula for that :D

I don't really understand the OP's question. How much did I bring? I dunno - a couple of thousand bucks to tide me over until my first salary check. I've left all my capital overseas, and I'm adding to it every month.
