could anyone tell me what a rough price of a Macaw would be..or even an African Grey.?

Cheers :o

Froggs

Froggshw, When I was last there, Macaws ranged from about 25,000 baht - 35,000 baht depending on age (older more expensive) and this was for Blue/Golds. As you get into the rarer Macaws the price can go up dramatically.

African Greys were around 20,000 - 25,000, but I did see some a little cheaper, but I was not impressed with the store of staff.

Jaansinatra is so right. These birds can be VERY noisy and do need a lot of human interaction to keep them entertained and sane.

A Grey or smaller Amazon is a good compromise in my opinion - not too big, great talker, not too noisy, easy to take care.

Spot on. :D

In the same section the have exotic reptiles - you can buy or order any type of snake. They even had a massive king cobra for sale as well as baby crocodiles. And in the salt water acquariums, they had black tipped sharks and almost any fish you can think off. Amazing.

DLock, thanks for the feedback, though what was it that did not impress you about the store or staff?

I found Bob the owner to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They will offer a 72 hour period where you can get the bird checked thoroughly by a Avian Vet and if you are not satisfied in any way they will let you return the bird to the store and get a full refund.

Chopper, I was referring to most of the stores in JJ - the birds did not appear happy, store not clean and staff could not answer basic questions.

The store I liked at JJ was run by a very knowlegeable Thai lady and that may be where Meg bought her Grey. Her store is very clean and bright and the birds all looked in really good health. She had 4 or 5 different birds on stands that were ver friendly. There were another 1 or 2 stores that had good birds, but if you go to JJ that one store will stand out - all white and good lighting and air-con.

Bob sounds like he knows and cares for his birds and the 72 hour guarantee is pretty cool. He sounds like me when I had to sell my puppies - if I didnt like the people or think they could give a good home, I wouldnt sell.

Meg, that is certainly a lot less expensive than Mini's Aviary. DLock is quite right on the prices he has quoted. The Amazonian Parrot at Mini's is 50,000 baht.

I don't know about Amazonian Parrots but I did see some on my last visit to the shop in Jatujak, along with some cockatoo's and she said the price was around 12,000. I also got to see the mother and father of my African grey when purchasing.

I was quoted 25,000 baht at Mini's Aviary - I paid 10,000 at Jatujak. Just have a good look at the shop, parrots health, ask alot of questions ect. The lady who I bought MK from said I could call her 24 hours if I needed any help, or I could go back to her anytime.

Meg,

Thanks for the pics of MK.

Meg, a challenge to you and all the other board members reading this posting. If you or any others find a Amazon at JJ or elsewhere for B12000 let me know, I will will run down there, buy it and after 2 weeks quarantine if it still is healthy I will pay you B5000 and either keep the Amazon or let you buy it from me for B12,000 and with the B5000 reward you will own a B50000 bird for only B7000, such a deal, keep in touch.

I just thought I would update everyone. Thanks for all of the constructive replies they were helpful in making my final decision. I opted in the end to purchase from Mini's Aviary. Mini together with her husband Bob are very knowledgeable, were able to answer every and any question and provide an excellent post sale follow up service so I would thoroughly recommend them.

Attached herewith is a photo of 'May'. post-22319-1218070966_thumb.jpgpost-22319-1218071085_thumb.jpg

Lovely bird Chopper, glad you got one. Ignore the negative comments - birds are also pets, not all of them should be in the trees.

Thanks 'pattaya_girl'. :D

Judging by 'kedawi's' remark one could surmise he holds the view that to have birds as a pet in any other country is not cruel and not illegal. He is not exactly the font of all knowledge. :o

Chopper, Jatuchak has a pretty good selection of parrots in the newer section. There is about 15-20 breeders and whilst some are clearly a little dodgy, there are 3 or 4 that are exceptionally clean and have excellent birds at various ages, from chicks that are still on eye dropper feedings to more mature birds.

You can pretty much buy any bird from Macaws and Amazons, to any Australian parrot.

There are also a few stores that specialise in cages and they have some really good large cages on wheels, as well as all the accesories, toys, and feed.

I think its worth the trip up the check out what they have. You will easily spend a few hours there looking at the birds and talking to breeders.

Don't mistake the Pet section in the older Jatuchak (near homewares) for the bird section. That's just nasty.

Thanks NotNew2You, that seems a sensible option. They have many birds in there such as Macau's that are from a few weeks old and they are being weaned onto their own food and taken care of for a few months until the assessment of the shop is that they are ready to be sold. Many of those have had deposits put down on them.

The particular bird I am interested in is less noisy than a Macau not as shrill, however it is very talkative, a fast learner and very intelligent: some would venture to suggest like its potential owner. :D

It is two and a half months old now and ready to be taken out of the shop. I will test their reaction to a veterinary check. Since it will be at my expense there is no downside for them and a refusal might raise the question as to why? Putting a deposit down and leaving it in the shop for an extra month or two would be a good idea also.

I would add my 2baht to the suggestion for an African Grey.

When I had my Grey back in San Francisco my 90+ year old grandmother lived with me.

She had a pretty bad and distinctive cough in her last years and Baby, the Grey, mimicked it perfectly.

I well remember the day I came home from work and Rose, my grandma, said hey can you listen youa bird isa sick.

Baby mimicked the doorbell exactly and caused many unneeded trips to the door.

During Rose's last few months I hired a woman to help during the day. I got her through the ahhhh Italian Men's Club and

she was from the same area of Calabria as Rose and Baby soon mimicked both sides of their conversations in spirited Italian.

Classic! :D

So yes they are bi-lingual.

Take the time to choose well, your bird should be part of your family for a long time.

Good advice. :o

Let me add a few comments here please, I am the Bob at Mini's Aviary.

JJ market as it is commonly called does not have bird breeders there. Those are retail low price/quality/service stores, the breeders avoid JJ because there are rampant diseases constantly being fought there. Birds kept in cramped cages and no real interaction with humans except for feeding. We specialize in young hand fed birds that my wife personally feeds up to 4 times a day. 90% of these young birds are sold before they are weaned and the new owners come in almost daily to bond with their new birds. A parrot is a lifetime purchase, we have had customers that have had their parrots for over 50 years.

We offer a guarantee posted on our windows that says. 72 hour money back guarantee if bird returned because of ill health of the bird. These prices are not negotiable. 90 day trade in allowance for less/more expensive bird, no refund.

See if anyone will give a guarantee in writing at JJ. We have had customers that purchased there and the bird died within 48 hours, when they went back to complain the store laughed at them,

I am not trying to say all birds purchased at JJ are going to be sick, but right now it is common knowledge in the industry that there is some kind of disease going around the market. Make sure you get some kind of guarantee in writing by the owner.

We have a much higher overhead than a stall at JJ and we quarantine our new birds either next door at our nursery or at our country home on 1 rai of land where we also keep and raise 15 dogs with the same concept as Mini's Aviary, that is we don't keep them in cages, they are free to romp and roam all over the property.

We fall in love with our birds as well as our dogs and when my wife sells one of my favorites and I grumble she reminds me that "remember this is our business"

Good luck to all of you on your parrot purchases from wherever you get them and if you need, cages, stands, food, toys or just some free advice feel free to stop by or PM me.

what kind of dogs do you sell?

We sell all breeds, puppies only, on a customer order basis. We don't sell dogs younger than 8 weeks, all have had at least 1 puppy shot, all come from reputable breeders or come from our own bitches at our country farm. We quarantine them for 1 week at our shop to make sure they are healthy and eating and shitting regularly.

The customer has a choice of M/F with and without pedigree papers. Most customers order without papers as they are not breeding or showing the dogs and they are cheaper.

We just got a darling little Chihuahua for someone on the board who wanted papers, last month we got a beautiful Golder Retriever for customer and my wife fell in love with it. Beautiful coat, big feet, big head and nose. She wanted to keep it for herself which I would have allowed only if customer didn't want it. but customer fell in love too.

We prefer small dogs at our farm and currently the bitches include 2 Yorkies, 2 Min Pins, 3 Maltese, 1 Cocker, 1 Miniature Schnauzer. But we are not a puppy mill, none of the dogs are caged and have freedom to roam the 1 rai we have.

We have a order in right now for a Black Great Dane (not easy to find but we are searching as customer doesn't need it for 6 weeks for his daughter's birthday.

Could you PM me your email address? I should be going home to Thailand to stay in March. I currently work in the Middle East. I would be looking to get a Jack Russell or Miniature Pinscer. I want to get a small dog that I can take with me in the truck, and not feel cramped in our small yard. I also want to get a dog with some spunk, that likes to play and is intelligent. I've always trained my dogs to verbal and hand signals, I even had one that I could point my finger at, say bang, and he'd fall over like I shot him... anyway... I'm anxious to have a pet again. I'd appreciate any help you can afford me.

Thanks, Chris

I myself have a Miniature Pinscer - She is almost 7 years old now with a lovely temperament, although a little nervous. She has been a wonderful dog but i believe they have problems with there teeth, as my Miniature Pinscer teeth have rotted and her breath smells terrible, so bad that I have to keep her outside, a guy walked past my house one day, and stopped, he said he also had one with the same teeth and breath problem. I still like her though, just put a peg on my nose when i go near her haha.

Thanks for the advice Pattaya girl... I guess I'll stick with the Jack Russell type then... I won't be rough with the dog, but I would hope that they would be ready to scrap a little... I don't want a mean dog, just one that's a little feisty. :o

I have had 7 Min Pin's in last 5 years here in LOS and never had a dental problem thank God because with the 4 I have now at least 1 and sometimes 3 sleep in bed with my wife and I.

Min Pin's are much more common in LOS than Jack Russells so are much less expensive. I have lost 3 of my Min Pin's because they think they are Doberman's and attack German Shepards and Buffalo hearders dogs and loose every time.

I just spent a month nursing my male back to health after a scrap with my black Lab mix over whose bowl of food was in front of the lab. 1 chomp pierced top and bottom of MP's neck and paralyzed him for a week but a good vet and myself nursed him back to health.

A neighbor in Hawaii had the meanest JR I ever saw, he hated everyone and every dog in the neighborhood but love the 13 y/o kid that owned him. I do believe Jack Russells are meaner and smarter and easier to train than Min Pin's but maybe not as loving and cuddly as the MP.

Leave them alone and you will help to get rid of this nasty trade.

these animals deserve to be free not banged up in a cage or for that matter a condo in pattaya.

Ive seen that shop, in 3rd road, If no one buys his birds he will go out of business. and that will help a lot of birds.

As the time gets closer to March and my return home, I'll read up on both Min Pins and JR's. I like them both, and know that they both have their good and bad points. I've heard the JR's tend to have a short fuse, and an even shorter attention span. After hearing about the dental problems for th MP's, I worry. I'll read up on both and hopefully be able to make a better educated decision.

Thanks again!

Got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning did you?

These birds are not native to Thailand so setting them free probably will kill them. We don't keep them cooped up in cages but in big open Aviary's. Most of our customers keep the birds on stands during the day and just put them in cages or their own aviary at night while they sleep to protect them from predators.

They are usually fed properly and taken care of like a dog or cat, but unlike dog or cat will usually outlive the owner.

I know the subject line may be open for a lot of pisstakes but it is the feathered kind I am referring to. :D

Has anyone bought from Mini's Aviary Exotic pets near Excite Disco? I want to buy a Yellow-headed Amazon Parrot but don't want a dead duck so to speak. I will suggest a trip to the vet for a quick MOT and if the bird checks out will then purchase on that basis.

Would be interested to know if anyone has any experience with the above mentioned shop.

Chopper, Don't waste your time in Pattaya, Jatujak is the place to go if you're looking for a parrot. I bought an African Grey just a little under a year ago at Jatujak in Bangkok. He was just a few months old and I paid around 10,000 baht for him. I had no problems at all, The lady in the shop was extremely friendly and helpful. My african grey is sat next to me right now chattering away. I have quite a few cats so the first thing he learnt was to meow! And then he learnt to call his own name.. Ha ha ha.. His vocabulary is growing fast.

My bird is not too noisy, however, if you are going to let your bird in your house on a bird stand throughout the day, be prepared for the mess!!! I can't stand having a dirty floor, however my parrot 'MK' makes it impossible to have a clean floor.

I think I still have the card somewhere for the place where I bought MK. If you would like me to PM you the info, just let me know.

Good luck!! :o

did the woman a Chatjujak give you all the right documentation?

African Grey Parrot.

Near Threatened in the 2007 IUCN Red List.[4] A recent analysis suggests that up to 21% of the global population may be taken from the wild annually, [5] primarily for the pet trade.

Quote from Wikipedia....

The African Grey Parrot is listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This requires that exports be accompanied by a permit issued by a national authority and that a finding has been made that the export is non-detrimental to the species in the wild. With exports totaling more than 350,000 specimens from 1994-2003,[11] the grey parrot is one of the most heavily-traded CITES-listed bird species. In response to continuing population declines, exceeded quotas and unsustainable and illegal trade, including among range States, CITES included the grey parrot in Phase VI of the CITES Review of Significant Trade in 2004. This review has resulted in recommended zero export quotas for several range States and a CITES Decision to develop regional management plans for the species.

In the United States, importation of wild-caught grey parrots is prohibited under the U.S. Wild Bird Conservation Act of 1992. In the European Union, an EU Directive of 2007 prevents importation of this and any other 'wild-caught' bird for the pet trade.

Hi Chopper. If it's not too late in the story, you may like to check out Sanam Luong 2. It is off Phuttamonthon 2 road. They are much cleaner than Chattuchak and also in most cases, cleaner as well! They too, have a great selection of cages and accessories, food etc. I used to buy fish from Chattuchak, but over 50% died on me. I get a 100% survival rate from this place at near half the cost as well. The people are really nice too. If you want better travel instructions, "PM" me and I will be happy to provide them. I live not too far from the place as well. Apart from fish and birds, they have all kinds of pets, plants, flowers, garden warez and pretty good food to top it all. Cheers.
