Can anyone recommend me "tried and tested" Mac MP4 converter that is available for free download ?

I've been to some of the sites, but the free download either doesn't work or too many limitations. I need one that can help me convert my MPG into MP4 for the purpose of iMovie editing.

I used Moviesformypod for AVI and Handbrake for DVD's.

I think you're referring to QT Pro, not the QT that comes with my iMac.

I've just tried iskysoft, it works for mp4 but not 3gp.
