Regrettably, there is no special visa for owners of a place to live in Thailand. Depending on how long you plan to stay you should get a single-entry tourist visa, single-entry or multiple-entry non-O visa. For the non-O visa it is best not to apply at the embassy in London but at an honorary consulate, eg at Hull. Application can be made by mail.

If you want to work, you should apply for a non-B visa and after arrival in Thailand get a work permit.

Gary . Without knowing too much about you. You would be advised to Contact Hull Thai Consulate and obtain a Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa. Reason for visiting friends.

It will mean you have to do a border run every 90 days. If you do the last one just before the Visa expires you can stretch it out to 15 months.

If you are married to a Thai lady or over 50 you have other options.
