The crackling speaker in my moobaan, city based, announced that the amount of thefts in the area has increased dramatically. He cited the high cost of food and people being out of work. Suggested that everyone ensure that houses are locked up tight and motorbikes and everything else be locked away.

Perhaps a preview of things to come, everyone might want to give a little thought to their home and personal security just in case this trend continues. Obviously not suggest a panic etc, just food for thought.

Noticed over in the general forum members gloating that falling tourist numbers would be good for them personally to get a range of "products" cheaper. That may well be but there could be other societal implications.

My wife has been trying to convince me to lock the door when I go out for years.

Having said that, the majority of the crime in our village is still alcohol or domestic related.

The theft of a minor family member's motorbike this year caused a stir but I'm not convinced it wasn't "payback" motivated rather than dishonesty.

My attitude is "what the eye can't see the heart doesn't grieve for".

Keep your goodies in a safe place and keep temptation out of people's path.

There have been a bunch of break-ins in the Thapae Gate area lately. They have been entering by breaking holes in the roof.

As far as I know, this is the first time that this has happened since I have lived in this area.

I read UG's post to Tilac. Her response: You think its bad now? Watch what happens if the casinos come.

If you like animals and have a secure garden, get a dog. He/she will be a great companion and depending on breed will be a visual deterrent to any n'er do well who fancies his chances. Even those stupid little yappy poodle & shitzu type dogs will raise an alarm but if you're out then all the prospective thief has to do is squash the little b*gger! :o

Cheers,

Pikey.

Thai burglars seem quite happy to poison dogs before entering the premises. :o

Yes, sometimes they take out a whole neighborhood of dogs.

At our facility we have a large outdoor storage area which is enclosed with steel mesh. Recently someone has broken in a couple of times and stole the more valuable metals. Specifically the copper and brass and pretty much all the wire stored there. We were doing electroplating there due to chemical fumes and using expensive oxygen free copper which most was taken. However they didn't touch a calculator and some other electronics there.

Talked to the boss and his comment also was the economy is creating the problem and people more desperate. I offered to install a motion detection and light/alarm system but our new building is near completion and will be putting a more secure enclosure around the area.

He also told me the power company is having problems with people "dismantling" parts of the high tension cross country towers. Selectively removing the steel cross braces but not enough for the tower to collapse. Appears at least once they took too much and a tower did collapse. :o

If you go out for years, Scead, I'm Amazed your wife is still around!

Seriously though, I agree of course.

In our rural moo-barn the night time security man recently chased and got the number of a motorcycle getaway team which had stolen the batteries off a large truck. Happily for the neighbourhood it means that the large truck doesn't park here any more.

But he reports that strangers on bikes and bicycles, touring around after dark, probably looking for easy pickings, are more numerous these days.

Entry by hole-in-roof is indeed a popular method of Thai burglers. The Lohr insulation company points out that their inner-roof insulation foam which solidifies to form a thin concrete-like surface helps protect homes from such burglers. Other folk point out that it only needs a minor earth tremor to crack the stuff to pieces and ruin all your insulation and thief-proofing efforts!

Bummer, bummer, bummer. Crime occurs everywhere, but I don't think it is necessarily a worsening economy causing these new incidents here.

There have always been thieves, and there will always be thieves....

Point is, do a real security analysis of your environment. Truth is no one is immune- I was ripped off big time in the US about 15 years ago- the buggers took a 1300 lb. jewelery safe stuffed with about $20,000 worth of valuables, and many personal heirlooms and artifacts. Made a full police report, never heard a peep afterwards.

I hope no one on this forum experiences what I felt- it was like a kick in the stomach.

There has to be a special place in he_l for these cockroaches..... :o

In my inner-city neighborhood the neighbors have always been aware that robbers could walk in from the street and buglers could break in anywhere they could break in, including the roof. Sorry to hear the problem has spread out to the rosy gardened moo-bahns in the outskirts.

Ex-wife's house, way out in the sticks--built by yours truly, as you do--got burgled by entry through roof tiles and busting in through plasterboard ceiling--bastards did so well first time came back for seconds a few months later, only to find security was way increased and he couldn't get back out of the house [ ceiling too high and doors double locked with steel on all windows--brotherin-law arrived and shot the little bastard before dragging so-and -so to police station;hah, f...ing hah, we said-- I think he's still in Pitsanulok nick.
