August 10, 200817 yr Indeed Thunderbird is better than Outlook Express. You should be able to get the settings from your email provider. Eksample: SMTP: smtp.mailserver.com IMAP: imap.mailserver.com If you use a mailserver outside your ISPs domain you might want to look into alternate SMTP ports, cause they will most likely block port 25 to anything else than their own mail server. Commonly used is port 587. Good luck
August 10, 200817 yr WHat do I put when asked for "incoming server" and "outgoing server"?Is this better than outlook express? I used outlook express to access my hotmail and gmail emails. I received recently a message from Microsoft explaining that I wouldn't be able to access my hotmail emails from outlook express and that I had to upgrade to Windows Live Mail. I tried and got lots of problems. So, I tried Thunderbird and everything works fine now. It is at least as good as OE. If you need help, about incoming and outgoing server settings, you should indicate which type of email account you would like to use. Stef

Use the server settings you have configured in your outlook express I tried T'bird after M$ said they would no longer let Outlook Express work with Hotmail, but then they backed down so I stayed with OE. The main reason I tried it was because M$'s alternative to OE, Windows Live Mail, is IMHO a pile of doggy-doos. August 10, 200817 yr Author Thanks all but still confused. re. Setting up the servers, have a look here นิรนาม: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/-t198215.htm...t&p=2070469 That's a gret link, thanks.
August 10, 200817 yr Author HELP I canot figure out where to find my incoming and outging server information. Could someone please explain in easy terms.
August 10, 200817 yr I'm not too sure on the technical aspects, but I do recall an excellent episode of Blue Peter where they showed you how to make your own Tracey Island, which I am sure would help you set up your Thunderbirds. I am sure you will find it on YouTube if you search hard enough.
August 10, 200817 yr HELPI canot figure out where to find my incoming and outging server information. Could someone please explain in easy terms. I just remembered! You need to download and install (as "add-ons" - extensions - in Thunderbird) "Webmail v. 1.3.2" and "Webmail - Hotmail v. 1.2.15". They are what I have installed. Read about them here: http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html The Webmail extension must be installed first and Thunderbird restarted. Then install Webmail-Hotmail extension. Read more about Webmail here: http://www.reaper-x.com/2006/09/20/accessi...ng-thunderbird/ Two other useful pages are: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_SMTP_se...8Thunderbird%29 - using multiple SMTP servers http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with...d_Mozilla_Suite - using Gmail with T'bird. So after you have the extensions installed, the procedure in the link I posted should be clearer because it describes how to set up lots of Hotmail accounts, i.e. how to use multiple SMTP servers: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/-t198215.htm...t&p=2070469 Could someone please explain in easy terms. I don't think there are easy terms. Now that Firefox 3 is out and "stable" , maybe Mozilla will put more resources into Thunderbird to make it as easy to use as Firefox. But for the time being, it's a fairly "geeky" product.

August 11, 200817 yr I use Windows Live Mail The settings are need from ISP, So, which ISP you're using? Cheers.
August 11, 200817 yr If anyone has Thunderbird working with Yahoo, I would be grateful if you could post the settings. I have it working for Hotmail and AIM (same settings) and GMail (it gets its own plug-in)...but not Yahoo.
August 11, 200817 yr I use Windows Live Mail I am guessing you have a free Hotmail account. If this is the case you cannot use Thunderbird as Hotmail does not support POP 3. Try using G MAIL it is much better and has POP3.

Hotmail in Thunderbird Webmail As for Yahoo, if you do not have a pop3 account but use Yahoo webmail then you can use Ypops! How to setup various e-mail providers in Thunderbird

August 12, 200817 yr After lots of trying searching, I've come to the conclusion that I can't use thunderbird for hotmail. Do you currently use Outlook Express to download your Hotmail emails? I ask because you mentioned it in your first post. If you do use Outlook Express, then your Hotmail account is - like mine are - very old and still allows access from OE and Outlook. People who sign up for Hotmail accounts now have to pay for such access. So if you can use Outlook Express to access Hotmail, you can use Thunderbird. You need to install the add-ons in Thunderbird to enable Webmail and Hotmail as I have written above (post #10) and summarized in this link: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/-t198215.htm...t&p=2138722 I can download my emails from my Gmail and several Hotmail accounts using T'bird, but am staying with Outlook Express for the time being.

Isn't there an add-on for Yahoo? Have a look here: http://webmail.mozdev.org/index.html
August 12, 200817 yr After lots of trying searching, I've come to the conclusion that I can't use thunderbird for hotmail. PM me the name and password and I'll see if I can get it going. Then I'll give the details to you and you can change the password. Genuine offer, no BS!
