gguy
Today, I had my teeth cleaned. The whole process took about 15 to 20 minutes. I try to keep my teeth clean and brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush. The cost of the cleaning was 1200 Baht plus 150 Baht hospital fee. The cleaning was excellent. Is this a reasonable fee? One price for all dental cleanings seems unfair. I have a friend whose cleanings usually exceeds an hour because he does not brush properly and generally has bad teeth and he is a big baby. I like the dentist at the hospital and I am wary of the sanitation at the smaller dental clinics.

BPH o.c. is the most expensive places to go, but they have a good rep. ref. dental, at least. I can highly recommend "Dental Arts" next to Pittinis Coffe Shop on Soi Bouakao. Two great dentists, caring, clean and fair.
Farma
Scale, clean and polish never cost more than 500 Baht at private clinics. Cheapest so far at a government hospital a couple of years ago was 40 Baht.

mgjackson69
OP> The cleaning was excellent Ok, you are happy with the cleaning, one vote "for" OP> Is this a reasonable fee? Reasonable is subjective OP> One price for all dental cleanings seems unfair. Life is unfair...get used to it. OP> I like the dentist at the hospital... Ok, there is another vote "for" OP> ...and I am wary of the sanitation at the smaller dental clinics. Another vote "for" So there are three votes "for", no votes "against", except for you maybe thinking that you paid more than someone paid somewhere else. Convert that 1350 THB to your home currency, then compare the price here to the price "there". Bottom line, are you happy with what you paid for? You do not need someone else to tell you that. FWIW, up in the village, I take my wife, her daughter (6 years), and myself to the local clinic for regular cleanings. 750 THB for the three of us. balo
If you can afford it , go for it! But really cleaning the teeths for 1300 Baht , its close to the price they charge over in Europe. My dentist is 500 Baht .
Riley'sLife
I pay 200 THB at the local Army Hospital. No appointment necessary, super efficient, clean, and quick. This is Thailand, why pay Euro prices?

taxexile
dental plaque (the soft buildup) that collects because of poor or non existent tooth brushing can be removed by yourself with floss and a toothbrush , once you have been shown the correct method of using the toothbrush etc. some people buld up large amounts of hard tartar , hard calcific deposits , usually behind the lower incisors and on the cheek side of the upper molars. the saliva glands have ducts that open behind the lower fronts and upper molars , and the calcium comes from the saliva. this stuff needs to be removed regularly , large build ups cause gum problems among other things , every 6 months at least if you produce a lot of the stuff. if you havent had a scaling for a long while , and you produce a lot of this stuff , then it can take an hour or two to get rid of it all , it can be very very difficult to dislodge. a relatively clean mouth shouldnt take more than 15-20 minutes to " buff up". in older people , who have allowed their gums to deteriorate , then regular cleaning is necessary , tartar or not , in order to clean under the gums. but whether it takes 20 minutes or 40 minutes , the instruments have to be cleaned and sterilised , the surgery has to be prepared , and all the disposable items have to be accounted for. hence the one cost for all. if the cleaning is done by a periodontist ( gum specialist) then 1200 is a fair price as they will have the full range of instruments that can access all the nooks and crannies and the knowledge and experience of handling them and recognising problems and potential problems and how to treat them. once gum problems have set in it can be difficult to repair the damage done , and it is the gums and the tissues under the gums that hold the teeth in the jaws , it is a lot easier to repair broken down teeth than broken down gums. skimping on scaling is a false economy. Familyonthemove
..... I must be one of those people mentioned by taxexile with the calciferous salivary glands as I had stalectites on the inside of my lower teeth. Took an hour of zapping with water jets, scraping with capt hooks hand and calcium shrapnel pinging off the light to clean 'em up. 800 Baht and worth every one. Bangkok Smiles Plus in Ekamai. I ditto this post. I get calcification in my lower teeth as well as staining from too much coffee, it's usually an hour and costs me 800thb. 1350 seems expensive. Cuban
I have used an upcountry dentist for the past 3 years - 600 Baht for 30 minutes cleaning and a poke around. Very clean practice, never need to book although sometimes they are busy which I consider a good sign.
PattayaParent
Convert that 1350 THB to your home currency, then compare the price here to the price "there". gguy
Looking at the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital website, Dental Cleaning is listed at 1300 Baht plus an unknown hospital fee. The prices at the hospitals are getting outrageous. I am sure that the dental price escalation is also reflected in their other services.
12DrinkMore
I have paid between 500 and 800 Baht, very happy with the treatment and all had modern equipment using the ultrasonic "boulder bashers".
thaibeachlovers
To add my 5 cents worth about Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, I went to get a root canal there, and the "dragon lady" dentist refused to do it ( after drilling a hole to have a look ) so ended up having to get it done at a clinic on 2nd Rd. and paying for 2 fillings, same tooth. Not a happy chap. I DO NOT RECOMMEND BANGKOK PATTAYA HOSPITAL!!!!! Just went up to the clinic to see if it's still open, and there is a for sale sign on the window, so looks like I too will be seeking a new dentist. The Modern Smile certainly looks promising. torrenova
I used to get mine done at PIH with Dr Aree (fell out with the hospital over another issue) and over the years she went up from about Bt900 to Bt1150 at the last visit. I was wary of smaller places. Perhaps they did not have the sonic cleaner or sufficient training. Had mine done last month in London and with a check up it was £110 so about Bt7000. Don't fret if you had a good job done for Bt1350. The difference, even if Bt500, is over 6 months or so which works out at nothing per day. The time taken would worry me though but only because I do not know the state of your teeth beforehand. If ok, then nothing to worry about. Now if someone who knows could recommend a clinic with a decent dentist which has all the equipment needed then they could be in line for some of my business. gguy
I found an old bill from 2001. COST WAS 700 BAHT TOTAL!!!!!!!!!!! From what I remember, the Dr. was the same, equipment was the same, everything same same. Medical Inflation in Pattaya. The only thing different was all the brand new buildings. Below is my contribution, TBL Just went there today. The directions in their website are rubbish, even the Thai hotel staff nearby couldn't work it out. It's on the right hand side looking towards Sukhumvit, before Carrefour Supermarket. Didn't actually need treatment after all, but certainly seem like nice people; didn't try to do unnecessary work. I'd be happy to go there for treatment. Edited August 25, 2008 by thaibeachlovers
