Hi. I've just acquired my work permit 3 months back so my question is a little premature but I want to find out how long it will take me to acquire Thai citizenship and will I have to renounce my US citizenship. A colleague of mine from an Asian country just got his citizenship and he told me that he had to go to his embassy and renounce his citizenship formally to acquire Thai citizenship. WIll I be required to do the same.

After how many years of maintaining work permit will I be eligibile for a green card and after green card how long to get the citizenship. Sorry if these questions have already been asked and answered.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

You'll sooner win the lottery than gain Thai citizenship.

We'd all love to have that Thai passport, too, but don't go renouncing anything you're going to regret later.

In other words, fuggedaboutit...

Green card, difficult to get, but maybe... Some farangs got it, but as they generally say: what a mess!

Thai citizenship, your chance are near 0...

And if I remember well, yes, you must renounce your US citizenship. The thai law don't recognize 2 citizenships for one person: you have to choose!.. And IMHO, as says Relayer: "please, make the true good choice!"

Also, I don't normally respond to troll posts such as this, but the question of Thai citizenship often does come up and it's helpful to remind people of the reality of the situation facing us westerners.

Rubbish!

Thousands of Thais have double citizenship! While not formally accepted it is tolerated! The same is valid for most farang countries!

As for acquiring The Thai Passport,it's a long, long and extremely difficult enterprise.Check the forum for detailed information. :o

Hi

Re dual citizenship... my wife holds both UK & Thai citizenship with no problems.

As for obtaining Thai citizenship, I was told by a BKK based farang practicing lawyer who specializes in this field that it is possible, but a requirement is to be able to speak Thai fluently and also read it. So that rules me out as I only just about have a rudimentary grasp of my own language! Amounts of money do not enter into it. (I would think that if it was only Baht 200,000 they would be inundated)!

As if that was not enough one also has to learn the national anthem and sing it at the eventual ceremony.

Caveat .. This was a couple of years ago so I stand to be corrected if things have changed since then.

Enough said.
