I use Thunderbird for my emails and have always had the spell checker on " Enable spell check as you type "

I got to it through, Tools, options, composition, spelling, then, Enable spell check as you type.

My problem is it is not checking ? I have disabled it then enabled it again but it still does not check as I type. Has anybody had this problem ?

The check spelling before sending works but I want the check as I type option :o

Try this:

click: Dialogs - about:config

search for: mail.spellcheck.inline

the value must be true if it is shown as "false" double click on "false" and it will change to "true"

Close the config editor (click upper right X).

Restart Thunderbird

Attention: about:config is Thunderbirds registry. Do not try to play with it...

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply webfact. problem is I can't find Dialogs ? Ive looked everywhere, where the hel_l is it :o

Just type about:config in the address bar where you would normally type a web address. Just type in the filter box at the top the search term. I checked with FF 2.0.16 and mail.spellcheck.inline is not one of the options. Nor using Spell or Mail as the filter.

Go Here

Right click on English (United Kingdom)

Save as (somewhere you can remember)

Then in TB Tools - Add ons - Install

Then click Preferences (options may be your poison) Composition - Spelling - tick Enable Spell Check as you type

Make sure the dictionary is set to English / United Kingdom.

Cheers

IMHO we are talking about Thunderbird, not FF 2.0.16 as mentioned above.

To undercover: when you have open about:config in Dialog

Thundebrid sometimes ignores the settings from "options".

Note: you must mark "spell as you type" before you check the about:config, otherwise you will not find the line "mail.spellcheck.inline"

as an option.

What I have provided is a solution which might work.

Where's that embarrassed icon when I need it. :o Lost track of which client was discussed jumping between posts.

You can see where to open the "config editor" here:

I have always had "Enable spell check as you type" and "mail.spellcheck.inline" = true. All I get is the misspelled word underlined in red. I still have to do a spelling check to get the correct spelling. Am I missing something?

...maybe

TB will not automatically correct the word. I don't know if any of available spell checker will do that.

Instead you will be given some choices to correct the word marked misspelled.

And thats correct! E.g. you type "pritty". How can a spell checker know you mean "pretty" or "gritty"?

So, move the curser over the marked words and "right click".

Here we go!

Didn't know about the right click spell check feature. It also works with Firefox. Great.

It will save me a bit of time especially with Firefox.

Thanks for the information. :o
