For those planning a visa run to Nong Khai in the near future please be aware that the Mekong River is at a very critical level and about to burst its banks.

Apparently the river is at its highest level for over 50 years and houses on the Laos side of the river near Si Chiang-Mai already have one metre of water inside them.

At least ten schools in Nong Khai have been closed till this alert is over.

If the Mekong does overflow and the town is flooded this will bring major disruption to transport be it by car,bus or train.

Just be aware of this if you are intending to go to Nong Khai in the next few days.

Its a fair old swim across to the Laos Immigration side.
