PAD Lay Siege On Government House, NBT TV Station

Just a thought really. I'm not quite keen on either party. I think both should be sent to jail and forgotten. But with regards to Pallop I was wondering if there was any ground to arrest him, together with the other 9 PAD leaders on the basis of "Incitement to Violence". Surely there are grounds for that!

Thai protesters launch attack on Bangkok police HQ

BANGKOK, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Protesters trying to overthrow Thailand's government launched an attack on Bangkok's police headquarters on Friday before being repulsed by what appeared to be teargas, a Reuters reporter at the scene said.

After the assault by around 2,000 people, protesters were seen vomiting, the reporter said.

Good ! :o

Will make them think twice, trying to do it again,

What's next after occupying Government House, storming Police stations, blocking airports......???

storming 4 and 5* hotels and throw tourists out of the windows ?

:D

Sondhi shows who he really is: An idiot and not a peaceful reformer. He's after POWER...over Thailand.... :D

I agree anlong with my wife and probably every other resident here in our small village. My wife has called him much worse than an idiot she puts the F word in front.

At the last election, would you say your village were supporters of the PPP?

Samak isnt that popular up country it is only the Thaisin brand that helps him. He has previously been extreemly rude to Isaan people.

On your other point of its the Isaan that elects them and BKK that removes them. This time a large base of the crowd unless chnged tonight was actually from places like Chonburi, Chachoengsao, Prachuab, Phechburi and Chumporn. That would be a first !:D

Samak seems really affected by this by the way. He seesm to know he is in a corner and doesnt know how to get out

At this point, I doubt anyone anywhere can differentiate between Samak and this PPP government.

I wonder which rock Surapong is hiding under?

If they cant differentaite between Samak and the PPP than he is surely going down.

Surapong made a really pathetic spedech this afternoon about how in a week the PAD anf the gobvernment would not have such big differences. I wonder if he has been prescribing himself all kinds of meds

While I'm at it - why don't thai people from both political divides protest with their corrupt parties, so that they are given

* A Health Service free of charge - (I'm not keen on the fact that my father in Law at the age of 71 still works so he can pay his hospital fees)

* Some form of pension scheme (see above).

Personally I think it is disgusting that elderly people are forced to work to buy their daily bread - and if they cannot tough luck! Shamefull!

...I really get a laugh when the leftists on this forum complain about vote buying, people vote what they want no matter whose money they might have in their pockets. Ain't no one looking over their shoulders.

don't deceive yourself! you try to tell the forum, that all these millionaire vote buyers waste their money and not make pretty sure that it is invested properly. maybe there is less vote buying in bangkok (therefore no pro tax-sin result). but i've observed voting in small villages. there everybody knows what everybody is voting for, the marks are made in public (voluntarily!?). the puujai is often asked: "who should i vote for?" and he is often responsible for the correct results depending on the money he's spending. i believe that to be true for a clear majority of the tambons in the country. some voters are always bragging: "ha, i took their money but deceived them." this is nearly impossible. tax-sin did not become a billionaire thru giving money away for free........

I was in Thailand last Feb and March, during that period I observed an election that my wife and family voted at. It was all out in the open to observe, no one was looking over my families shoulder's. The only thing said was to me, and that was to stop taking photos, a reasonable request, as you can't take photos at my polling place in the US

There wasn't any money going around or my MIL would've gotten her share :o and voted as she dam_n well pleased.

I believe taxsin got his money the old fashioned way mostly through paying off the right gov't officials, and his wifes family connections. Oh I don't doubt there was money passed out to the right voters to influence their friends, but the folks in Chiang Mai kinda like the oily varmit.

Banharn cancels his press conference

Chart Thai Party leader Banharn Silapa-archa abruptly cancelled his press conference due to unknown reason.

Reporters were informed earlier that Banharn will hold a press conference at 9pm.

His party is one of six coalition parties in Samak Government which is facing a tension following police's use of forces against protesters.

Now did he receive a bag of lucre not to leave the coaliton or was it because he got bored rimming Samak?

Thanks. That was what I thought, but I wasn't sure.

Not sure how to take your response. If was a reference relating to vote buying I can tell you that PPP didn't have to buy votes here. All the others tried to but the people were smart enough to take the money and voted for the people that they belived would do the most for them.

Pressure mounts on Thailand's PM

Pressure is building on Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, amid spiralling protests against his rule.

In the latest incident, hundreds of protesters were dispersed by security forces after attacking the police headquarters in Bangkok.

Thousands of activists are still occupying the main government complex in the city.

And blockades and strike action have closed airports and disrupted rail services outside the capital.

The head of the army, Gen Anupong Paochinda, has said the military will not mount a coup - but he has called for the government to hold negotiations with protesters.

This is something the authorities have so far refused to do.

The protests are led by a conservative group called the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

They say Mr Samak is a puppet of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by a military coup in 2006 and is now in exile to avoid facing trial over corruption charges.

Protests spread

A crowd of about 2,000 demonstrators attacked police headquarters in Bangkok late on Friday.

But the crowds were dispersed after police fired what appeared to be teargas. One correspondent reported seeing several protesters vomiting.

Demonstrations are also said to have taken place at two major airports in the south of the country.

Phuket and Krabi airports have closed, and there were reports of blockades at Hat Yai. Reports suggested protesters were planning to mount similar actions at Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north.

Some rail workers have gone on strike in support of the protests and to demand better work conditions, disrupting services on lines from Bangkok to the country's north-east.

And union leaders - including those from flagship airline Thai Airways - have called for workers to join in the stoppage. Strikes at state industries are banned, but unions get around the ban by urging their members to take sick leave.

Meanwhile, the occupation of the main government complex in Bangkok is now in its fourth day. Protesters say they will not leave until Mr Samak's government resigns.

There were minor clashes earlier on Friday after police tried to serve a court order for their eviction. But the police suddenly pulled back their forces.

Precarious

Rumours of an impending coup have been circulating in Thailand throughout the week, our correspondent says.

For three days Gen Anupong has deliberately kept his forces above the fray. o.gif

But on Friday he decided to step in - insisting the military would not mount a coup, but also calling on the government to negotiate with protesters.

"The army will not stage a coup. The political crisis should be resolved by political means," he said, according to AP news agency.

The position of Prime Minister Samak, who had hoped he could tough out these protests, now looks precarious, our correspondent says.

This crisis began on Tuesday, when thousands of PAD supporters took to the streets of Bangkok and forced their way into government buildings and a state TV station.

Nine PAD leaders now face charges of insurrection, a crime that can carry the death penalty, after Tuesday's violent raids.

The PAD was originally formed in the months before the 2006 coup, to demand Mr Thaksin's resignation - and it has re-emerged now that the country is being led by his former ally Mr Samak.

It has a passionate following in parts of the country, especially Bangkok, and some powerful backers among the elite, our correspondent says. But it has little support in most rural Thailand, which voted strongly for Prime Minister Samak, and Mr Thaksin before him.

Well these images of tear gas, protesters, airport chaos... I know if I was sitting in Europe, thinking of where to book for my winter holidays exactly what my thoughts would be.

When this island has, along with all the other headwinds in poor global economy, rising ticket prices etc, a truly sucky low season.. We know where the blame lies.

G.W. Bush's quid pro quo to his oil baron buddies for giving him the job.

9 years ago I predicted this 2-3 times rise in oil prices in Bush's last 3/4 year,

of his final term as payback to his masters.

It is very saddening to be so right on something like this.

Yeah it has been sucky for sure. Only one super model all month.

Unless their is a direct appeal from the Palace, then I don't see any other alternative than a SoE. However, to do this, the military would have to act against the PAD, which has acted as a buffer against a return to power by Thaksin. While I have no doubt that Gen. Anupong would act strictly according to the law as he is honorable, there will be some that won't be in favor of this.

Anyway, it is all politics at that level.

BTW, I love your comment on Surapong.

Just an other one-sided idiotic posting - it was quiet obvious while ever the "authorities" stayed out of the picture and in the back-ground there wasn't any real problems -other than an ongoing protest. But esculate the conflit as was done today by raiding the protesters and man-handling a lot of old people, women and kids - well, is there any real need to spell it out for those with limited critical thinking skills.

Hmmmmm... :D

who has limited thinking skills....? :D

"They - the key PAD leaders, in particular Sondhi Limthongkul and Chamlong Srimuang - have now refined their argument to propose rural voters in Thailand are too poorly educated to be allowed to elect a parliament, and that it should be a largely appointed body instead."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7584369.stm

You know, Mr. Artisi, I find that an insult to the Thai rural voters, poor or not and it shows and confirms WHO Sondhi really is....

A DANGEROUS MAN for the future of Thailand.

I don't give <deleted> about Thaksin and/or Samak, but mind my words:

SONDHI IS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS FOR THAILAND !

Time will tell.

LaoPo

Thinking skills should lead you to the point that Sondhi et al are more interested in change than in running the country. Should a change come about by this current unrest do you really think that Sondhi is in a position to really make a great deal of difference - was he part of the military government after the previous change or is he part of this current government - NO - so what does that say.

As for the rural voters - that is a very complex argument as you well know but it now appears that many rural voters, thanks to PAD, have a much better understanding about who they voted for last time and may well reconsider their voting preferences next time around. Plus I have my own thoughts and do not require Sondhi or yourself or any other to assist me in reaching my own views - as do many other people in Thailand whether they are rural folks, hi-so or academics.

But still, no one knows for sure which way the the generals will choose to go. I personally dont think the generals want to be handed government again.

Neither the generals or police will use force because HM has spoken against use of violence. Samak can't declare a state of emergency because it would reveal him to be totally impotent. His only option is to find a political solution and its a bit too bloody late for that now.

And here you have it - from the Bangkok Post:

Army commander Anupong Paojinda has reportedly rejected Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's call for invocation of the emergency decree and recommended that the premier step down or dissolve the House of Representatives to ease tensions, a source said.

Samak is out of options now.

In my opinion the PAD wants to make a coup...I think they even told "a coup of the people".

For a coup you need the mass media. If I declare alone at home that I am the new premier of Thailand no one will notice it.

So they need at least NBT, than go in the government house and declare that they are the new junta.....

Everyone broadcasts it. Samak runs away (or the army helps a bit) and the coup is finished.

If somebody would provide the transportation I am sue that a lot of folks would show up to support the elected goverment. Since TRT came into power a lot of things have improved up here. Roads fixed, water systems that work and a lot more and that is why the people support the PPP and Samak and are still PO'ed about the coup and now the PAD. New scare at NBT

Hundreds of PAD protesters moved to the headquarters of the National Broadcasting Television (NBT) Friday evening, following reports that the NBT would serve as a news centre for government TV and radio stations.

They gathered without incident at the NBT headquarters around 7 pm. The headquarters had been largely deserted by the staffs, amid speculation of the protesters' arrival. Old programmes were being re-run.

On Tuesday, PAD protesters briefly seized the TV station but dispersed after the aggression backfired publicly and they failed to get the NBT to broadcast relayed signals from the PAD's cable network ASTV.

Just a scare tactic by PAD :o
