I'm asking about the things that happened that led to the silencing of ม in this word - as it doesn't fall into the standard pattern of र्म --> -รรม --> /ʌm/

....

Due to they have a different pattern between -รรม and the exception rule of that -รรม์ (like someone said that "language are arbitrary") ..................................... Nice day :o

Hi Khru Ae ...

This is a dreadful waste of talents for a Thai speaker, but would you mind transliterating into Thai script my newborn son's name?

Jack Macquarie

I posted this in the Tattoo thread but haven't gotten a response yet :s

.............................

Dear Chuckler,

Congratulations on your new born. The way you can write your son's name in thai is "แจ็ค แม็คไกวร์ = jaek maek-gwai". Fortunately that this is the popular name and many thai people can pronounce it from foreign celebrities' name, and I hope that your son will be the next celebrity in Thai. :o

Hope you have a nice day,

Kroo ae

I think the last name should be something more like แม็คควอรี่ -- Mack-kwo-ree. Is that closer to the pronunciation, Chuckler?

................................................................................

................

Dear all,

Hmm, I think that's right. Sorry that I've never check before, but after I've checked with google and found that you can say both แม็คควอรี่ --maek-kwor-ree -- and แม็คควารี่ --maek-kwaa-ree. Apologize for this confuse Krap.

Sweat Dream,

Kroo Ae

Khun MTLae,

From Matichon Weekly,

"None of the Thai units are absolute standards, much like it has been in most ancient societies because there was no reason to have (absolute standards). One round of boxing was measured by a coconut shell with a hole in it; none (of the coconut shells or the holes) were equal. _______________________ . __________________."

My questions involve:

1. Please explain how traditional Thai boxing match rounds were measured. Were coconut shells really used and are they still being used?

2. What is being measured in "เวลากี่ชั้นฉาย ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับความสูงของคนวัด" and how is the measurement used?

3. What is the standard for the Chedi measurement in "เจดีย์สูงเท่านกเขาเหินก็ขึ้นอยู่กับนกเขาตัวไหน"?

Thank you so much for your assistance, Khun MTLae.

in response to q2...

david, i'm fairly sure you own the book ภาษาไทยวันละคำ (by กาญจนา นาคสกุล et al). ชั้นฉาย is in there. to put it very briefly, it's a method of measuring time based on length of a person's shadow.

in response to q1...

sounds like an hourglass-style measuring system using a coconut shell with a small hole and water/sand, but will look forward to learning more.

all the best

Dear DavidHouston,

From your questions above

1. The Traditional Thai boxing, we use coconut shells, drill the hole and put it float on the water to starting the boxing match. The coconut will keep sinking until the whole coconut shell drown that's mean the first round is over and also do the same thing to the following rounds. Now using coconut shell in the boxing match is rarely see but you are be able to see when there're the exhibition about Thai culture or in some province that they would like to continue this tradition.

2. Before I explain about this quote, I would like you to understand about the meaning of ชั้นฉาย "chan-chaay" : This word use to tell the time, we meassure the time by the human body's shadow from the sunlight in the afternoon and using foot to measure how long of the shadow if 1 foot long meaning 1 ชั้นฉาย, 2 feet long meaning 2 ชั้นฉาย which it's the way in the past to call the time instead of 2pm 3pm follow by the clock that's we using it now.

"เวลากี่ชั้นฉาย ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับความสูงของคนวัด" meaning we can tell the time depend to the length/height's person shadow which is not standard due to people, of course they dont have the same height.

3. เจดีย์สูงเท่านกเขาเหินก็ขึ้นอยู่กับนกเขาตัวไหน It imply the height of Chedi (Pagoda) to the flying level of Dove which they can fly very high compare to other type of birds. But in fact, Every dove cannot fly at the same level.

From your article from Matichon weekly, I understand that they want to tell you about the un-standardize system in Thailand by comparing to the Thai literary.

Thank you for your question which is very interesting and knowledgeable

It's my pleasure helping you and hope it make you more understanding.

Nice Days,

Kroo Ae

Hi Everyone!!!

From my post with the word "ได้อีก" also with noone answer :D

Anyway Let me explain this word

ได้อีก As people might know as "Getting more, having more" For example เราสามารถกินข้าวได้อีก (I can have more rice. I am not full yet.)

but another meaning when someone say to you

"เเกยังอ้วนได้อีกนะเนี่ย uan-daai-eak"

There're 2 meaning when you hear this phrase, try to think twice. Is there any hidden meaning in it?

1. Yes Probable I am not that's fat. I am still in a good shape so that's why my friends told me, I can get fatter.

2. You are fat. Actually they think you better stop eating now if you don't want to be worse than you are being right now.

So now you have to be more caution and find out the true meaning.

Mostly teenager use this phrase to make joke totheir friends.

Or you can say ผอมได้อีก อร่อยได้อีก any adjectives(คำคุณศัพท์) you can put in front of ..........ได้อีก

Hope you guy understand and enjoy learning Thai language.

Nice Day,

Kroo Ae :D

Hi Everyone!!!

As today October 14th.......I think people might forget how important of this day?

Today in Thai we call วันออกพรรษา wan-ork-pan-sa or another name วันมหาปวารณา Wan ma-haa bpa-waa-ra-na

Wan-ork-pan-sa is the end of Buddhist lent for 3 months (start 3 months ago). We can call this day "wan-ma-haa-bpa-waa-ra-na" too which the word "bpa waa-ra-na" mean allow, permit. The monk will have the ceremony which allow the monk to speak out and give opinion to other monks because within 3 months that they spent time together, some of them might have unappropiate behavior or some weakness also it's a chance for the recent/young monks to learn new things and ask questions.

Also one misterious thing that very famous "บั้งไฟพญานาค" King of Nagas along Mekong river, people are curious and would like to know that it's true or not.

Take place at night of wan-ork-pan-sa day in Nong Khai province

Are there any one has experiences saw it before??

For some people, they don't believe, they said it's scam. For this one we don't know exactly..... :o

See with your own eyes, it's the best way to believe i guess....

Sawatdee!!! / Good evening everyone !!!

Lately people in this forum seem to be disappear, suspicious or getting sick of Thai political situation ? :o

Anyway My topic for today is

"The Chulalongkorn Day" or Thai people always call this day "Piyamaharaj Day" This Day is on October 23rd of every year. It's the memorial day of passing away of King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V).

Through his reign, King Chulalongkorn became the beloved King of all Thais and foreigners who live in the Kingdom of Siam. He revolutionized the communication system post and telegraph service,Thailand's first railroad, replaced the lunar calendar with the western calendar, introduced the modern system of banknote, declared religious fredom, allowing Christianity and Islam to be practiced in the Buddhist country.

The great thing that make Thai people become equally is He declared amnesty for all political prisoners, and also gradually abolished slavery.

His Majesty passed away on October 23rd 1910 at the age of 57. To remind the great King Chulalongkorn, the government of Thailand has announced on this day to be the National Holiday.

So that's mean this coming Thursday is a holiday, Don't forget !! No work !!! :D

Nice Day everyone !!

Dear Tgeezer,

Reading your Thai written....until the word "ช่วยด้วย" made me smile :D . I am so proud of your effort writing Thai.

For your question about Thai vowel เ- and เ-ะ

*The word เมตร we use เ- .....เมตร = หน่วยวัความยาวเป็นเมตร (meter) we dont have เม็ตร in Thai, May be you might hear people say it เม็ตร (conversational word) which is not correct in Thai gramma and have meaningless.

*ใบรับรองสถานะทางการเงิน / ใบรับรองฐานะทางการเงิน= bank statement (Getting this paper from the bank that you have an account with to tell your financial status).

*And the word "ว่า" There are several meaning but from your sentence ผมเรียนว่า = I learn that ("ว่า" = that) For more examples

ฉันพูดว่า = I said that...... ฉันคิดว่า = I think that....

another meaning of "ว่า" = ตำหนิ scold, berate, admonish

"I don't like karatchagaan and in speach use [เจ้า.....ตำรวจ]cant find jownati." เจ้าหน้าที่ jow-na-ti

why don't you like karatchagaan? because you are doubtful about them? :D

Thank you very much for your kind words. I shall write in english because it took ages to write the post. Yesterday I bought a typing course and hope to renew my assault on your lovely language with less effort very soon. As to the difference between 'karatchgan' and 'jownati' I have the feeling that the former is more general and that the second has rank implications. I saw several notices referring to 'karatchagan' at immigration today and now have a better feel for its use. As to the long vowel maybe I am wrong and it is only me that says 'met' I will try mate in 4th tone and see if I get any 'looks' Thanks again.

When I read the ก็เลยไป I was delighted with my erudition and not a little disappointed when I saw that I had not written that. My diary has several thousand incorrect renditions of the date. Kroo Ae and all you other erudite and knowledgeable posters, please forgive my ignorance but; I have questions. I am attempting to learn spoken Thai, without the script, and have questions regarding the romanisation of Thai words.

1) What sound does aw make ? Khaw, raw

2) What sound does dt or pb make ? Is it your choice ?

3) Why do words that sound 'g' get written 'k' ? Shrimp.

4) Romanising Thai words, why do they have letters at the end with no sound ? Shinawatra, Siamkomintr

Yes, I'm moaning but, sometimes you just need to know :o

Thanks for any help.

Kroo Ae,

Your contributions to this site is invaluable, i wonder if i would be better for you to start new threads when you have a new topic to discuss or challenge us on, and also for you to contribute to the other threads from other posters ?

This one has become very lenghty and therefore i often dont look at it as much now as it requires scrolling through many other posts to see if anything new has been written that i would be interested in.

Comments from other readers ?

It depends on which part of which country you are from and whether you retained the accent. I come from Southern England.

1) if you say plough like me then say "plough' for kaw-rice or white, for go in say 'sow'(pig)

2)dt- say 'd' with the tongue behind and touching the back of the top teeth.

pb-say 'p' but let no air escape the mouth.

3)linguists must know.

4)same again.

You are reading vaguely familiar symbols with alian sounds why not read alian symbols with matching alian sounds? Much less ambiguous and worth the effort.

Since I can’t read Thai script I am trying to use the transliteration available. Once I hear the word I can pronounce it well enough but, to know what the word sounds like by using a Romanized transliteration sounds nothing like the word in speech.

I can put letters together and make the proper sounds better than any grammar book that I have seen. Why would the authors of these texts not want to make the sounds easy to read and understand ?

My wife tells me that the Portugese were the first to attempt to Romanize the Thai language and apparently no-one has improved it since.

OK, my rant is over. Have a good day :o

Dear Fresnoboy,

Sorry for late reply....I was on my vacation :o

From your question

1. From my school teaching method, this "aw" can be "ao" too for example khao= he, rao/ puak rao= we

ao/ aw = ( in thai เ-า ) is a vowel ....To make it easy for you pronounce "ao/aw" you can refer to this word Taoism

2. dt = ต (dtor dtao) pronounce dt, t and for pb in my school method we use bp = ป (bpor bplaa) pronounce = bp,p

3. g = we use for ก (gor gai) and k = we use for ข (khor khai), ค(khor khwaay)

and for the word "shrimp" = in thai written= กุ้ง and to pronounce = gung (due to ก = g)

4. For Romanising Thai words, that you are wonder why some word have no sound in the end

From your example Shinawatra, it depend to the owner name to put no sound or have sound in the end, For some people they might prefer only "Shinawat" (Shi-na-wat)

Nice Days, Everyone
