You Not Only Need To Be Rich, You Need To Be Stupid Too !

Was at Central Chidlom today, just nosing around the Watch Exhibition....... Stopped at Porche Design, had a nice watch, asked to look at it. After examining it i asked him the price........ 7,500,000 Baht ( or somewhere around there ).

You not only need to be rich, you need to be stupid too !

not sure, but if you can spend that amount on a watch, maybe put it towards charity. ( i would love to see the gross margin calc on this product).

Why buy a watch? The sun comes up it's daytime, then it goes down 'n' it's nighttime again. Who needs a watch! :o

The exact same watch is half the price in New York.

And you can pick it up at about a 1/3rd the Thai price if you look around the international watch markets.

I had to double check on the price there!!! but

PORSCHE DESIGN Indicator P6910 by ETERNA
porschedesign_indicator2-thumb.jpg

porschedesign_indicator1-thumb.jpg

Recently I was reading Luxist and one of the readers suggested that Porsche Design should not make pens and instead they should stick to what they specialize in. Well Porsche Design may not specialize in watches or pens, but Eterna and Graf von Faber-Castell surely do. This watch is the Porsche Design P6910 Indicator by Eterna. It costs close to a $150,000 and is the only automatic chrono in the world which is equipped with a mechanical-digital stopwatch display.

So the price is around 5 Million THB, with a nice mark up of 2.5 million THB....

But yes, you do have to be stupid to pay for this as well as rich

Wonder if the goverment have put a mass order in already :o

It's all relative. There are billions in the world who would say the same about those "rich/stupid" people who chew gum.

But if you can't get a visa for Usa or anywhere else(dubious background) your stuck here with your millions.

My sales pitch would be you can have this and a new Cayenne Turbo for the price of a BMW 760 Li, now we really are talking stupid money!

Something I think many people who don't have money misunderstand is when you have so much money you don't know what to do with it most price tags become meaningless, you say someone would be stupid to buy this watch but if you have everything you could want already such a purchase is like a spur of the moment 3000 Bhatt purchase for the average guy.

Before coming to Thailand, I had my 14 year old Seiko (automatic, diving - weight driven) repaired because it was gaining time (running fast). The "watchmaker" (this was his "trade") was an elderly gentleman & the only "watchmaker" in South Sydney. BTW, I paid about AUD$400.00 for my watch & the repair cost me AUD$17.00. (First repair ever.)

Whilst he was repairing my old watch, I asked him about a good "time piece". His reply was something like this..."If you want a watch that keeps excellent time, buy a $5.00 Casio (electronic) & throw it away after 2 years. Keep doing this until these cheap Casio watches are no longer available."

Me: "What about my watch?"

Him: "Your watch will last you many years to come providing that you can find a watchmaker to make any repairs."

Me: "Very true. Before I came to you for this problem, I went back to the people who sold me the watch, who sent it to Seiko. Seiko said that there was nothing wrong with it."

Him: "Obviously they were wrong."

Me: "Obviously."

The phrase "more money than sense" comes to mind but this has already been referred to in the OP.

just sounds like op is a guy without. why hate those that have lots who dont have to worry what things cost.

Stephaniee, it's so good to see you take "time out" from watching Thai boys masturbate for hours on end. :D Unfortunately, I cannot detect any "hatred" in anybody's remarks so far. Perhaps your "hate" detector is set to the "super sensitive" level? :o

After reading on the forum about so many TV members that are wealthy enough to come to Thailand and retire when they are only in their twenties and thirties, I am sure that a fancy 7 million Baht watch would be just a drop in the bucket for them and would be a wonderful gift for them to give as an expression of love to their Thai girlfriend. :D I am in my sixties and do not consider myself ever old enough to totally retire so I guess my Thai wife is going to be happy with wearing a Casio G-Shock ! :o

Not disputing what you are saying jetjock but I think that there is a clear difference between an "an expression of love" & "ego". Once this has been considered, the "expensive gift" in question was not really intended to make the recipient happy. Conversely, this act was meant to gain "browny points" for the giver of such a "gift"...ie "buying" someones love.

I like watches, in fact I collect watches and I'll be adding to my collection at the end of this assignment - my end of assignment bonus is already earmarked for a watch I've had my eye on for a year or so.

Some people will spend money on cars, some will spend money on fine wines - It's a personal thing.

With respect to the watch the OP refers to, I think it's a waste of money on two fronts. Firstly as I pointed out above, you can find the same watch at a 1/3rd of the price elsewhere, and secondly, as someone else pointed out, for the same money you could fly to Switzerland and buy a really very special watch.

But I think there is something more than these points. This watch is just another example, albeit an extremely expensive example, of 'Branding' - To me the idea that Porche can design a better watch than the specialist watch makers is as a load of old <deleted>.

I'd much rather have this beasty... it is after all the original 'Big Piliot's Watch' and the watch that has (let's be kind) 'Inspired' Porche's design.

Give me the original every time... non of this branding <deleted>.

Keeping in mind that Original High Quality Watches have done extremely well in terms of return on investment these last few years (always assuming you can bring yourself to part with the watch in order to realize the investment.

I have a Casio digital with at least 10 more functions and cost only 21 Sing.

Nice watch though! But not what I pay for time, but what time pays me. :o.

Just a warning. In Thailand never buy more watch than you can walk away from :o or land, condo etc

A watch is a statement in style and sure as hel_l George Clooney doesn't wear a swatch. If you own a 150k watch then your seven cars are worth a few mill, Dollars of course and not to mention the yacht and forget about the houses Its all relative.

Beautiful watch, would love to have one, but I can't read those small dials without reaching for my reading glasses, and that's too much trouble. Is that moon phases at the top? Do I need that? It also looks like a wind-up; I can never remember to wind anything.

So I'll settle for a better Casio digital, thank you. If it's lifted off me one night in Soi 8, so be it.

Chicken nuggets. 49 Baht for 6 at McDonald's. 180 Baht for about 40 pieces (frozen) at just about any Tesco Lotus. How about the same steak at Central Market for $18 that costs $40 at Ruth's Chris? Easy, plenty of people don't want to cook themselves, in the same way that they don't want to fly to wherever to get the watch there and save a few bucks.

But you don't hear too many people complaining about that because it doesn't exactly wound the ego now does it? There's no need to "rationalize" to make oneself feel better that they *really* must be stupid, are likely living on credit, that they must be doing something illegal, or how you really only need a sun dial and water clock to tell time, etc., etc.

One of the bigger markets for collectable watches (such as IWC, Porsche Design, etc) is Thailand; IIRC Asia is a larger market for watches than Europe and USA put together.

That price is for marketing the watch to promote the show; no collector e.g. K Charoen has to pay that, and I can guarantee most of the watch collectors in Thailand know exactly which watches they want and which they will buy here or elsewhere.

Since the tax here is 5%, it stands to reason that Thailand is marginally more than buying in Europe SOMETIMES, but often cheaper than other places regionally.

If it really is available 1/3 of this price, then that is probably close to what it will sell at here if at all.

I've attended some fairly high end private watch events here in Thailand, and the collectors do know a awful lot about which Pateks are truly limited edition and which are limited edition 5,000 units (!@) which won't increase in value.

Typically, the two high end watches I have bought here, one was 40% discount, the other was 50% discount. Now admittedly I am a little more connected in retail than most, but high discounts are the norm, a few brands are capped e.g. Rolex I think the max discount they can give is 15%, but most are a free for all. 50% is about the most.

As a non rich person I choose to spend money on a watch and drive a pick up and live in a cheap condo. Others might own a CRV or a Hummer, live in the Sukhothai and not own a watch at all are they stupid for wasting their cash on that?

Get over it; plenty of people choosing to spend their cash on watches or other luxuries made their money fair and square, and now want to enjoy themselves.

Tonight I think I'll order the foie gras, am I stupid when I could buy dub bpet kahng tanon for like 10b 1 stick??!
