“joiner’s Not Welcome” – How Does One Know?

How does one know if an establishment is 'Joiner Friendly' or not – What signs give away that a place is 'Joiner Friendly', what signs give away that a place is not 'Joiner Friendly'?

You ask them.

There, how hard was that.

If you where running an establishment that you decided could do better without the 'Joiner Trade' how would you get the message across that 'Joiner's are not Welcome'?

I would put up a sign.

There, how hard was that.

I believe that this is one of the topics that are banned and we're not allowed to talk about it, as per the forum rules.

Once I saw a sign saying "no Thai people" pasted on the door leading to the staircase in a Bangkok guesthouse. Obviously this sign was directed at would be joiners. It left me wondering how reactions would be at a sign saying "no British people allowed" in a London guesthouse.

Several places (hotels AND bars/restaurants) in Khao San Road do not welcome Thai females. They do not care if the lady is married or not. They just deny them entry.

Actually it's more easy for a Thai to know who is who. I never stay in an hotel in KSR since I married but we've never been denied entry in any place, bars or restaurants.

Yes, that is extraordinarily offensive and inept.

I've read that Khao San Road guesthouses have a policy of rejecting tourists with ladies of the night but of course it's very difficult for the girl at reception to apply the policy. Every now and then an Asian American woman for example has been more than affronted. What she says is simply that the hotel is full but that's not very convincing when they're checking in other guests with pallid skins.

A country that encourages a huge sex trade however invites such conflicts.

The hotel I stay in when in Bangkok has a sign outside saying, 'Sex Tourists Not Welcome'. It's not far from soi 4 and despite the sign the occasional jock tries to bring his short time lady in.

The owner decided years ago that the hotel was his home and that he should be able to choose the sort of guests he wanted to have around him. Friends in the hotel business told him it was commercial suicide but he's carved himself a niche and even in low season the place is always full.

My wife, Cat is half my age (as you may already have read somewhere) and we stay there comfortably, though after many years they all know I've led a blameless life. Come in off the street with a young Thai wife and you might put the dog among the pigeons.

True, Thais know Thais better than we do.

But still, a lady that used to belong to a certain profession, and is now very well married, and a lady that never belonged to that profession, will very often be treated badly by a lot of restaurant staff around BKK. This because they arrive with a foreigner, and the staff start to assume things.

I once went to the Mexican restaurant at Hotel Rembrandt. The treatment the local staff gave my wife was disgraceful.

Needless to say maybe, but the lesson I gave the Maitre D' will never be forgotten.

I must be going to a different Thailand or maybe it's my choice of accommodation. If I should return to the hotel at night alone the concierge "discreetly" asks me if I'd like some female company for the evening. :D

And that has happened in hotels with numerous stars to their names. :o

The only hotel I have stayed at in Thailand where "joiners" were not welcome was the Dusit Thani in Bangkok. A fact that proved useful later in the evening trying to escape the attentions of one of Pat Pong's boiler makers in drag.

Agreed, hotel and restaurant staffs don’t have crystal ball so it's impossible for them to know the profession of their guest. But one thing they can easily spot is the social status of the visitor and then decide if it matches the place or not. I never see any high class escort girl refused the entry of a restaurant or a bar, even the most select ones.

I know the place. The reason that it is full is because is priced at about 75% less than other similar hotels in the area and it even has a swimming pool. A lot of my friends stay there when they are low on funds, and for entertainment, they patronize the short time hotels and massage parlors that are all around the neighborhood. You might tell the owner that if he goes ahead and pays people to stay there, he can fill it all year round! :o

Which hotel are you thinking about? It must be a different one.

The one I'm talking about has nice gardens and a swimming pool, an attractive old style lobby and restaurant with perhaps the most extensive menu of Thai food in Bangkok, including a huge vegetarian range. There's wi-fi, computers available, a reading room, gymn, a map selection, free book shelf and subscriptions to a wide range of international magazines. In fact it offers a special welcome to writers.

The rooms are spartan but otherwise it's a gem of a place.

And, yes, it's excellent value, but that I think is a good thing.

Is this the place you're talking about? If so, the lobby and pool area do have a lot of character but the rooms are shabby to say the least.

What is a 'joiner' ?? :o

Additional person or persons who come to stay, usually overnight, with you in your hotel room.

Need a diagram? :D

Ah cheers. I seem to be getting more naive the older I get.

Diagram not necessary thanks, although you could draw one up for us anyway :D .

To save confusion perhaps they should change the namefrom "Joiners" to "Scaffolders Fee", or more to the point an "erectors fee"?

What is a 'joiner' ?? :o
/ Carpenter/Joiner i beleive, although why they would single out this profession is a little odd to say the least :D

Baffles me too, m8. I know a couple of joiners, one of whom is also a cabinet maker, and they can usually pay their own way?? :D There seems to be a groundswell of public opinion against manual (blue collar) workers especially in the UK, for example. The only "workshops" mentioned these days are for single-parent-black-lesbian types, who have virtually no knowledge of joinery or even light engineering!!!

Seems anyone who really works for a living is going to get it in the neck. - I even heard a rumour that they are going to start arresting people for having sexual relations with miners. :D

Sounds like plane discrimination to me. :D

I should have "saw" that coming :(

That is the one, but it might be the name of a Southern American City that hosted the Olympics fairly recently and arrested some guy for blowing up a bomb that he actually found and warned other people about.

Anyway, sh*te hotel! :D

http://www.theatlantahotelbangkok.com/caveat.php

Caveat

The Atlanta is run on conservative principles and fosters traditional values.

The Atlanta does not hesitate to refuse rooms to persons unsuited to the prevailing ethos of The Atlanta.

The Atlanta does not welcome SEX TOURISTS, and does not try to be polite about it.

Borderline cases are not given the benefit of the doubt, but are treated as sex tourists.

Those who are borderline cases should stay elsewhere.

Guests who attempt to bring in bargirls, catamites and their like will be told in plain language to settle their bills and leave.

Remaining on the premises after being told to leave will be treated as a police matter.

The Atlanta does not ask for or listen to explanations or excuses, and does not apologise for the manner in which miscreants are thrown out.

The Atlanta also does not apologise for any mistakes it may be accused of having made with regard to the identification of sex tourists.

To keep The Atlanta private, secure, wholesome and sleaze-free for the kind of guests we welcome,

room guests are not permitted to take visitors / outsiders upstairs into the bulding and their rooms, or into the garden and pool area.

Exceptions may be made in appropriate circumstances at the management's discretion.

Suitable visitors / outsiders may be entertained in the restaurant.

The Atlanta operates a "ZERO TOLERANCE " policy regarding

* TROUBLE-MAKERS,

* POSSESSORS AND USERS OF ILLICIT DRUGS and

* ALL OTHER ILLEGAL AND NEFARIOUS ACTIVITIES

'Zero tolerance' means that the police are called without advance warning to the miscreant, without hesitation and without apology.

Visitors who object to any of The Atlanta's policies or who intend to spend their time in Thailand whoring and indulging in alcohol abuse and illicit drugs should stay elsewhere. The Atlanta is not that kind of place.

Tourism is not about going on a rampage through other people's country: those who cannot travel abroad without behaving badly should stay home.

On these policies, The Atlanta is not interested in dissenting public opinion or what the business world calls

'customer feedback'.

The Atlanta caters to a certain kind of clientele and that is the end of the matter.

No discussion. No compromise.

I have some difficulty in permitting others to impose their moral values on me. Of course if the room is sold and priced as a single I would expect that if anyone else occupied the room (of whatever complexion) they should pay an extra charge but if the room has been paid for two it is extortion.

If there is a total no visitor policy and no charges are made or oiners admitted I would feel that is more aceptable.

That's the kind of thing I was thinking - but how would you know the policy - how to get the message across?
