The following comes from an article in Matichon by Ajarn Nithi Eewsriwong. I would like to know the meaning of the term "ยี้" in the following context:

Under the old political system, the urban middle class could exert pressure on the Prime Minister (who was not elected based on their votes) so that he did not dare appoint _______ as Ministers nor would he dare allow ______ to control certain large Ministries.

The only thing I can find from the RID is

which appears to indicate an interjection. Domnern Sathienpong uses the word "yucky" or "yuk" which doesn't seem to fit the usage in this context.

Thanks.

I think the original word is ยี่ which means a twenty baht bank note ,ธนบัตรใบละ 20 บาท. The media call those who win elections by buying votes ส.

This is the meaning which is used in the context.

It means the one who people feel displeased or disgusted. The one which when you mention the name, people would say "ยี้ ".

This word was started using to refer to a politician more than ten years ago.

Great! A challenge from Khun Yoot. How would we translate this phrase into English?

How about " despicable character", "loathsome creature", "abhorrent character", "slimy politician", or "repugnant personality"? The sentence would then read,

"Under the old political system, the urban middle class could exert pressure on the Prime Minister (who was not elected based on their

votes) so that he did not dare appoint a despicable character as a Minister nor would he dare allow any of these slimy politicians to control certain large Ministries."

Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you, Khun Yoot and Khun Wanida.
