MayBeLater Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Hi all, I quite like morlam music, especially the older traditional style, but also the modern morlam is very enjoyable. Does anyone know if there is something like a morlam festival being held in the Issan annually (think monthly would be over the top :-) Thanks for reading, MBL P.S. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76Vo0fxkNPE I know its Laos..

Someone beat me to it -- just google morlam dancing and look at the options on http://www.morlam-luktung.com/ If you are anywhere near Nakhon Phanom, the fire-boat festival is next month. The day before the final displays in Nak Phan there is a SPECTACULAR display of dance & music in That Phanom held in front of the ghedi. I last saw it 7 years ago so will be going back this year. It starts early morning and is attended by all the BKK big-wigs who then travel 50kms North to the fire-boats.
Patriot Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Around 14th Oct (Aug Pansa) there will be heaps of festivals all over the region. One of my favourites is the one held in Chiang Khan, Loei usually aug pansa time. Just wish the village hooligans would stop ruining the gatherings

I have been going to Chiang Karn the last 10 years , and the violence seems to be escalating. Last year there seemed to be more battles going on between young tenage girls who were wild on Lao Khao. As usual the police just stood and watched. Also the young bloods seem to go around in big groups , all very scary. But will be going again this year I expect ! Shame because the music is good, saw Sriporn Wunpen a few years back too, magic
Patriot Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Hey Spiny, What are the exact dates for the Chiang Khan festival this year? Thanks
Totster Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 You'll usually find some "superstars" touring around Isaan during the winter months, look for the ads at road junctions etc.. also the smaller travelling acts that tour the villages performing for rice, with differing quality Violence has always been a problem at these events, too much Lao Kao, testoterone and face all contribute, the best advice is to leave when the (real) police do, as the local village police are rarely able to prevent the fighting, even if they are carrying M16's.......... Totster
soundman Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 too much Lao Kao, Totster The current fad is "yah dong" - lao kao mixed with all sorts of weird and wonderful herbs. Tastes like antiseptic.
