I was in my local gym in Rayong today. Its a very limited gym and all the equipment is home made. This is fine and I have learnt to make the most of it. However there isn't really enough weight for me to get a full workout as I like. So, I asked the owner how much it would cost to have a couple of extra dumbbells made up for me at my expense. He got straight on the phone and called the fabrication place that he normally uses to get a price. He was on the phone quite a long time and when he finished he told me it would be 2200 baht per dumbbell, each one being 30kg in weight. This seems like a lot to me, but I don't know anything about steel prices. I know its a little untrustworthy to doubt him but he did tell the guy on the phone that it was for a ferang several times.

If this is the price then I question how the owner of the gym ever got his equipment made. He doesn't look like the kind of gym to spend tens of thousands of baht to open a gym at 20 baht a go.

Does this price seem about right?

I'll get another quote when I have time.

...perhaps not - if he has to make the mold specialy for a 30kg dumbell that would'nt be too expensive. Steel has nearly doubled over the last 18months on the retail market, though they would almost certainly use scrap steel to make them.

There are a couple places in BKK that sell weights -why don't you check the prices out.

The weights he was modeling from didn't look that well made. I think he may be cutting the steel from a bar.

Most weight I have seen in shops only ge to a max of 10kg although I have never looked for good fitness shops anywhere.

Steel has become very expensive over the past 12 months.

I think steel plate and bar products are around 45B/kg at the moment.

That would make a 30kg dumbell 1350B in raw material plus all the labour & machining involved and of course commission for the guy ordering it. :o

Yeah, you are probably right. I just can't work out how the old guy that owns the gym had his stuff made. One bar is 100kg, which must have cost 4000 Baht plus, just for that one. He only has a hand full of people in his gym each day at 20 baht each. It seems like there is unlikley to be a cheap way of doing it so I'll make do with what he has. I wanted to make some 35kg and 40kg weight too. Maybe I will wait for the price of steel to drop a bit lower, like until its about the same price as wood. :D

price doesnt sound too bad although the mention of farang probably bumped it up......try making an offer of 3000 bt for the 2 and say thats all your willing to pay,u may be surprised at the answer.if your going to leave them at the gym then i suspect the owner would/should be a bit persuasive too if you tell him you buying them for him not for yourself!!

did u want 35kg and 40kg dumbells too? if so what u gonna do with them,if you using dumbells this heavy then i would suggest finding a better equipped gym .

dumbells are pretty expensive in europe, check out a few websites for prices on heavier dumbells,i suspect the price will be double or even triple the thai price.

I don't think the owner of the gym would be too bothered as there is no one else in the gym that will use them.

I would love to find a better gym, but I have searched for one and this is the best in the area. I have to travel 30km to get to this one, which is much further than I would like to travel. I have often thought I'd like to make me own gym close to home but if this is the price for a single pair of dumbbells then thats out of the question.

Soundman is right on the money.

I just purchased 105 tons of steel for a project and the going rate varies from $2000 to $2400 per ton which would give you a material cost around 2240 Baht for the material alone.

Bog standard low carbon grade steel is produced in Thailand. It sells on the local market in plate or bar form for around 45- 50 Baht / kilo. Most other higher grade alloys and stainless has to be imported at a high price.

If the OP wants 30kg dumbells, then 1,500 for materials + 700 for the fabrication sounds like a decent price to me. I recently was looking at some 15kg dumbells in the Laem Thong sports shop in Rayong that were around 4,000+ for a 15kg unit. :o

Well it just goes to show. There was me doubting the poor guys truthfulness. Still, I did have reason since he charges me 5 times the price of a Thai to use his gym.

Anyway I just can't bring myself to pay the 4400 baht, which is about 70 GBP to me, for a pair of dumbbells that I consider standard equipment for a gym. Plus I would still ideally need the other bigger ones. I guess I will just make do with what there is there.
