Update:

Former PM Samak resigns from PPP leadership

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's most recent former prime minister, Samak Sundaravej, has resigned from his leadership post in the ruling People Power Party (PPP) but is still a member of the House of Representatives and also a member of the party, PPP registration officer Samarn Lertwongrat said on Tuesday.

Mr. Samarn said he had received the resignation letter from Mr. Samak on Monday stating that he wished to resign as PPP leader retroactive as of last Friday because he was no longer serving the government.

In Mr. Samak's letter of resignation, according to Mr. Samarn, the former prime minister said it is better for the PPP to select a suitable person to become the new leader replacing him.

The Constitution Court on September 9 stripped Mr. Samak of his post as premier for taking payments for hosting TV cooking shows which the court ruled had violated the charter.

According to PPP regulations, all 33 executive committee members of the party will serve in their posts for a maximum of 60 days with current Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat acting as party leader, Mr. Samarn said.

The party must hold an extraordinary meeting to elect a new party leader and executive committee, and the process must be completed by November 25, he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Somchai said he is prepared to listen to advice given by his predecessor.

Asked whether he would invite Mr. Samak with his vast experience in politics to become an adviser for the party, Mr. Somchai said he would need to first ask his party members.
