Dear Friends,

This from today's Matichon:

"การแบ่งแยกคนไทยออกเป็นพวกอย่างนี้มันไม่ใช่ทางที่ดี"

"The division of the Thais into groups like this is not a good thing."

"ตอนนี้ประเทศเพื่อนบ้านอย่างมาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ เวียดนาม กำลังหัวเราะเราอยู่ว่าคนไทยด้วยกันเองแท้ๆ"

"Currently, our neighboring countries, like Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, are laughing at us _________________ ."

Two questions:

1. In the phrase "หัวเราะเรา" I have never seen "หัวเราะ" used as a transitive verb meaning "to laugh at". I thought that to use the term in a transitive sense one would need to say, "หัวเราะเยาะ" or "เยาะเย้ย". Is the newspaper's usage correct?

The RID gives us "หัวเราะ ก. เปล่งเสียงแสดงความขบขัน ดีใจ ชอบใจ เป็นต้น, ใช้เข้าคู่กับคํา หัวไห้ เป็น หัวเราะหัวไห้ ก็มี". This definition seems to provide only an intransitive meaning.

2. The second question is the meaning of the clause, "ว่าคนไทยด้วยกันเองแท้ๆ". It appears from the context that "ว่า" means "that", not "criticize, but I could be wrong. It also appears that the sentence, which is from a quotation by Mr. Somsak, the new Minister of Agriculture, is incomplete but the newspaper has this clause as the final clause in the paragraph and the subsequent paragraph does not follow on. Could the entire clause, "ประเทศเพื่อน . . . กำลังหัวเราะเราอยู่ว่าคนไทยด้วยกันเองแท้ๆ" mean, "Our neighbors are really laughing among themselves and criticizing the Thais"? Somehow this rendering does not sound right to me.

This usage of หัวเราะ sounds fine to me, I've run into it as a transitive verb plenty of times. Snippets from the internet:

ทั้งคุณยาย น้าป้อ และแม่ หัวเราะลูกกันใหญ่ "Grandma, Aunt Po, and Mom all chuckled at the child." (The laughter here isn't derisive)

ฝรั่งหัวเราะฉันอาบน้ำตอนเย็น "A farang laughed at me for showering in the evening" or "A farang laughed at my showering in the evening" (Title of a blog post)

ต้องหัวเราะตัวเอง ถ้าหัวเราะตัวเองเป็น ทุกอย่างจะง่ายขึ้น "You have to be able to laugh at yourself. If you can laugh at yourself, everything is easier." (Shows it works as a reflexive verb)

ต่างคนก็ต่างหัวเราะกันและกัน "They all laughed at one another..." (Shows it works as a reciprocal verb, too)

As for your second part, if I were to translate it for sense and not strict meaning, I'd say "Right now our neighbors -- Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam -- are laughing at us, saying 'Thais love to fight amongst themselves...'"

As for your second part, if I were to translate it for sense and not strict meaning, I'd say "Right now our neighbors -- Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam -- are laughing at us, saying 'Thais love to fight amongst themselves...'"

As to the second question, your interpretation seems to get the sense correctly, however, I am still at a loss to see how the sentence structure supports the sense. I would very much appreciate an analysis of that portion of the sentence which says, ". . . กำลังหัวเราะเราอยู่ว่าคนไทยด้วยกันเองแท้ๆ" to parse out the meaning from the specific phrases. Apologies for butting in David, but I'd say the portion translates along the lines our neighbours are laughing at us as we're all Thais together (therefore we should not be arguing and fighting like this)- obviously this comes from the context of the ongoing political conflict. It like when the teacher tells an unruly class that's always fighting and squabbling that they're Pi nong duay kan eng tae tae ( no Thai script here) so they should be more united.

กำลังหัวเราะเรา -- "are laughing at us"

ว่า introduces the reason they're laughing -- what they're metaphorically "saying"

คนไทยด้วยกัน "Thais (fighting) together" --

เอง -- gives the meaning of "only Thais, just Thais (no other nation/race)"

แท้ๆ -- I'd say this does one of two things (maybe both) -- emphasizes that it's only Thais, that it's a completely internal problem caused by problems amongst themselves; and/or that this is typical Thai behavior (from the perspective of outside observes who have seen variations on this theme many times over the decades)

แท้ๆ is often used to form sentences like this:

A แท้ๆ ก็ยัง B

for example, from Google:

คำพูดตัวเองแท้ๆก็ยังแปลบิดเบือน

even though they were his own words, he still managed to distort them in translation.

อยู่ติดกันแท้ๆ ก็ยังยอมเสียเงินคุยโทรศัพท์กันอีก

even though they're right beside each other, they're still willing to pay to talk on the phone.

the effect of the construction is to show that B is unexpected or unbelievable or ridiculous, given A. in this case, we don't have the back half of the expression, but the meaning is the same. the implied 'B' part is the fact that there is such conflict and division in Thailand.

therefore, I'd propose a translation like:

"ตอนนี้ประเทศเพื่อนบ้านอย่างมาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ เวียดนาม กำลังหัวเราะเราอยู่ว่าคนไทยด้วยกันเองแท้ๆ"

Our neighbours are laughing at the ridiculousness of us being involved in such conflict amongst ourselves.

ด้วยกันเอง = with each other
