tigrlily Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Hello all! I've searched the site and read alot about TOT (mostly negative) and True (mediocre). I'm living in Bangkok and need to set up internet service in my Apartment. Is anyone happy with their ISP? Also, I might be showing of my technological naivete but I've heard or read of not being able to access sites abroad while in Thailand (youtube especially). Anyway around that? Any pointers would be much appreciated. cheers! Maya
jasreeve17 Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 A lot of it seems down to luck - how many others are sharing your bandwidth. My 2mb (hahahahahahahaha) True connection works very well. I expect it to get continually worse as they connect others and my bandwidth decreases. I tried to connect to TOT over a three month period but they continually did nothing, thus I was left with True and I've been lucky - it's very good at all times
rhino533 Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 I'm really happy with my ISP. I'm using TT&T Maxnet. The Website is www.maxnet.co.th The speed I use for home internet is 4096/512 and pay 1070 Baht per month. Actually they have many good cheap packages. I use this company for my internet cafe and for my home internet. Both work really well and both are really fast. The speed I use at my internet cafe is 6144/1024 it's more expensive because I'm signed up using there business sever. I pay just over 5,000 baht month for that connection. Check the website for packages that suit you they have many cheap and good packages. Cheers!
malcolmswaine Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 I've used TT&T (Maxnet), TOT, True and CAT. Out of all of them, the only service provider I would class as competent has been CAT. I pay about 2800 a month for my line, but it’s well worth it. No traffic shaping of any kind, no restrictions on torrents, no blocked ports etc ... Conversely, the worst provider I've used has been Maxnet. Such an awful service with traffic shaping, port blocking and days of service outage. A definite thumbs down in my experience.
niller74 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I have these 3 ISPs in Chiangmai: TOT: Bad/Average TT&T: Bad/Average CAT: Average/Good These are compared to what you could expect from connections in a country like Thailand. The lack of technical staff is huge in pretty much all of these companies, which is the main reason to quality of service. Furthermore companies like TOT and TT&T have a tendency to oversell their products.
webfact Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) CSloxinfo is quite good and reliable in my area in BKK 2 MB sme, ~1800/~440, local and international is equal. Can not complain about the media provider, but about the phone line provider only; thats TOT and that is where trouble only comes from... their crappy lines. Edited October 13, 2008 by webfact
monty Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Pretty much agree with Niller here, although I would give extra points for TT&T regarding less oversubscribing on their Premier package. CAT is the best of a bad lot, mainly because of having a huge supply of international bandwidth, and having the most experience in running an IIG. I would actually go as far as putting them on the same level as Western ISP's home packages, although at a much higher price! Note to the OP, living in Bangkok the TT&T services are NOT available, as they are only allowed to operate outside of BKK.
Lorin Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Talking on the subject, is CAT internet service available in central Bangkok on True phone line?
monty Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Talking on the subject, is CAT internet service available in central Bangkok on True phone line? CAT is not available on any phone line, they pull a dedicated, ADSL only, cable to your house/condo! No idea on Bkk, would love to get some reports in from BKK people!
lomatopo Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I always recommend that you talk with neighbors both to see what's available and what might be performing well for them. You may not be able to get both a True and TOT fixed line, and then you might not be able to get DSL from TOT, True or some other ISP. It is very much location-dependent. I have: True/True: rating 6/10, mainly issues with the physical line. Good customer service. TOT/CSLoxinfo: rating 10/10, zero outages/downtime in 3+ years. Excellent customer service. TOT/TOT: rating 8/10, decent performance but occasional service outages. Acceptable customer service. I have not experienced any problems accessing YouTube or any other sites. I think the MICT et al. are doing less of this these days?
sniffdog Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 TOT Cybegold 2MB / 10:50 pm No comment necessary.
Sabum Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I am willing to pay ANY price for fast reliable internet. CAT is the way to go? Where can I find a site showing their packages? How can I contact their salesmen? I tried True and they simply dont seem to want the business.....

torrenova Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I've had TOT in Pattaya and Buriram for 3 1/2 years and though the first 6 months in Pattaya was shaky with many fall outs, it has been remarkably efficient although slow at times. It does suffer from bandwidth allocation when the USA wakes up but if a download takes a bit longer it is not going to kill me. What kills me is when things don't work at all. For Bt1000 or so a month it is ok if not exceptional. NO ability to have TT&T so I don't know and CAT seems too expensive for my needs.
Lorin Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 http://www.catdatacom.com/th/promotion_details.asp?para=73 Its all in Thai, any place stating coverage area of Cat in BKK in English language?

Nana Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Have benn using Buddy broadband for the last 10 months www.buddybb.net after ending my contract with samarts crappy service. Buddy is owned by AIS if I'm correct. The service and speed has been 100% since day one. If I'm correct, they have a hub in each condo building. So I guess they will have less problems with over subscribing their lines. I have a 2mb line and having no problems watching european tv on my line. Cheers

Hope its not like so many other companies here that will just ignore me... it's almost like people dont like money here.... hmmm.

The sales/customer service dont care much about your money in Thailand, if its not going into their pocket. I just called CAT, talked to some sales by the name of Wannee, she told me to send her a MAP(!) of my condo, so tech guys can check if they lay a wires to there....:-) The funny thing I will as she said, cause the other internet providers are bad joke...
