The 2.8 is a BTO option so you better order it in advance. How much exactly is it in HK airport? I'd be surprised if they are cheaper than in the U.S....

Yeh ive noticed that that the BKK dealer if you to take one of the BTO options they inflate the price but the stock models are not too far off the us price.

HK was cheaper for my macbook pro's i am not sure whether that it is because its non existant import/customs duties. I will check this week what their price is for the new models. I can imagine the current models there are also heavily discounted now to clear the stock.

Nikster,

just called the store works out at US2400.00 (82000THB) for the 2.53ghz macbook pro from HKIA (New model). Not a bad price about US$100 cheaper than US Apple store. He is still waiting for prices on the 2.8ghz. In stock on Thursday/Friday he says.

I bought the Acer Aspire 6935 a few weeks ago. I use it because I needed the space and speed to encode HD DVD video.

I am not a computer geek but I know I am very happy to have this performance in a laptop. I paid about 69k baht for it.

Its fun. And I wanted it to be portable. It allows me to play with all the toys such as using my the LCDs as my computer monitor, skype and video editing (TMPG 4.0, Sony Vegas). I want to get into sound production as well. This computer takes the fear from buying software and not being able to use it based on other laptop limitations I had before.

Good choice!

Acer have really up there performance levels this year and truly are giving all the competition a run for their money. Also the design and look of the 6935 is very nice.

THe first real glitch I've found is it claims to have a Blu Ray DIsc; so I bought some Blu Ray discs and the computer says it doesn't have a sufficient grahics card. Hmmm that doesn't make sense. I guess I should have had the guys test a Blu Ray disc before I left.

I found an alternative site to upload and share videos. I couldn't upload onto Youtube.

It seems that upgrading to Acer Arcade Deluxe v1.13.4806 should solve your problem.

Does that include tax? In the U.S., it's $2500 without tax so gross would be close to $2700. Thai price is 91,900 for the 2.53 (which is the one I am eying).

Wow. THB 10,000 difference, almost worth a trip

Actually u could fly airasia to macau. Taxi to the Venetion hotel pickup the laptop for the same hong kong price from the premium dealer there. have a few rounds of blackjack and enjoy the free beers in the casino. fly back in the evening flight and you could still be 3000THB in hand :o

Nearly bought the 6920 in the UK in July but the price was cheaper in LOS so I waited until I got back. Shock, horror to find that it had been superseded with the 6935. I have the details for the 6935 in front of me but at 70k it is more than I want to spend.

I had the 6920 for £695 when the baht was 65 so it was 45k or so, about 40k now but I saw it in LOS for mid 30's. Nevermind.

What gets me is the way that nearly every shop has different specs for what should be the same machine. I mean, having a 5750 chip instead of a 8400 or 9300 and maybe 3gb versus 4gb RAM etc. really distorts comparisons which is, I suspect, what they want.

I've been so near to buying a new laptop a few times in the last few months but then something chucks a spanner in the works and it all changes. The lack of 15.4" and up in LOS is depressing with most at 13 or 14 which is too small for me.

Acer always do this and have spec variations on each model. best thing to do is go to the acer thailand website click the HOT PROMOTIONS on the left and select one of the magazine it will then load the magazine and u can see ALL the available models with their specs/model numbers and price. Take that to any acer dealer and show them the one you want and should be no problem.

A lot of 15.4" avail now in Thailand in the Acer range such as the 5930g etc.

I have heard that the new MBP should exceed it's rating in GHz because of it having a faster FSB of 1066 MHz and the RAM is the more advanced DDR3. Somebody earlier said that you get bottle necked at about 2.2 because of the FSB (I lack the knowledge to know if that is true or not). I would think the 2.8 model with that sort of FSB would scream. I am also not a geek and didn't thoroughly read every post in this thread. It is entirely possible I have no idea what I am talking about but this seemed to be the consensus of what I read about it online.

There are conflicting reports as to if using both GPU simultaneously is a software issue in Leopard (that could be addressed by an update), a hardware issue or an intentional limit put in place to keep from overheating, low battery life etc. Also whether or not the new MBP have the ability to address 8 GB of RAM is a point of contention as of now.

I am guessing that the new machines are specifically designed to take advantage of the architecture of the next iteration of OS X.

I have the 2.4 model and it is a beautiful machine.

If you prefer paper the Acer brochure is also available at any service center and at most dealers. It comes out every month, so be sure to have the latest one. Then browse and choose. It has all models and all prices in it, and dealers will happily give you those (pretty good) prices, but rarely go below, I guess margins are razor thin as it is. Dealers can also order most models, so it almost doesn't matter where you buy your machine.

I don't think you get a bottle neck. FSB speed doesn't have a huge impact on overall machine speed, but I guess DDR3 will be more energy-efficient than DDR2.

The new MBPs have the best Intel processors available right now - it's just that they aren't all that much faster than what was available this time last year (top 2.6 vs. 2.8 now, I think). They are more energy efficient though.

Here's what I read: NVidia chipset supports 8GB, but 8GB RAM will set you back $1500 at the moment, not really mass market. Hybrid SLI is possible with the hardware - but my guess is that any gains would be marginal considering the overhead. Dynamic switching of modes (without logging out) is possible in hardware also.

I am willing to bet good money that Apple will address that last issue first. Having to log out to change a setting is as un-Apple as it gets. The only reason that's still there is that it's probably pretty hard to implement, some major OS surgery probably required for that.

I think I'll get the 2.4 as well, mostly for build quality. The processor used in the 2.4 has a better TDP than the 2.53 and 2.8 versions. In english, the processor in the 2.4 uses less power.
