Is My Internet Connection Slow ?

Featured Replies

I know very little about computers, but my internet connection seems slow to me.

I use a Nolia 3110 C mobile phone + Ture Move Thailand. I live in north-east Bangkok.

When I download stuff, I usually get a "Transfer rate:" of 1.00 - 2.00 Kb/Sec.; the fastest I have seen after three weeks of usage is 4.2.

Possibly, this is slow, but what I should expect ?

Are you using the phone as a modem to your computer? Or are you using the phone, only, to browse the internet?

True GPRS sucks (I assume that you use GPRS as there is simply no True Move Internet)... as well as there rates. I use DTAC GPRS/Edge. Quite good (for a mobile connection). Can't give you the exact speed but I guess it's 128kbs or so.

You're probably talking about kBps (capital B indicates Bytes, 8 bits to the byte). So 2 kBps equates to a 16 kbps connection! Transfer rates are always indicated in kBps, connection speeds in kbps.

True has very little Edge coverage (The Nokia you mention is Edge capable), but even for regular gprs 2 kBps is very slow.

On AIS Edge I get between 8 and 20 kBps (64 kbps - 160 kbps), average probably 15 kBps (120 kbps).

Theoretical top speed on Edge is just under 30 kBps (238 kbps) but you'll never see that!

In short, get yourself a Dtac or an AIS sim card and you probably see speeds increase between 5 and tenfold!

Both providers have economical internet packages available on the pre-paid simcards.
