October 17, 200817 yr Hi, A German customer is visiting us soon and he asked me questions I could not answer: 1. He will bring his handy (cell) phone and want to know if he can get a local SIM card. Is it okay to get one at the airport or is a shop downtown a better option? Do German phones work in LOS? 2. WiFi: What does he have to do in order to get access to any WiFi connections for his Laptop while in Thailand? He is planing to travel throughout the country by car. opalhort
October 17, 200817 yr 1) his GSM phone must be sim lock free.. If he can place any random Euro sim in it and it works then hes OK.. I would buy AIS (12Call) sim simply as they seem to be the most coverage everywhere.. 2) Wifi will be dependent on the provider of the hotspot.. Starbucks, hotels, bars and the like..
October 17, 200817 yr 1) You can get sim cards anywhere ... from MBK to the smallest 7-11 or Family Marts. Maybe the price differs a bit, but if you imagine that you can buy a sim card for as low as THB 49, these differences are minimal. I would say AIS has the best coverage (even in remote places) so go for them. Buy one, put it in your phone. If it doesn't fire up go to MBK and have it unlocked. I remember that most T-Mobile phones are locked in Germany. 2) An enabled Wifi laptop. There are hundreds of free and paid Wifi spots around the country. Mind though that there might be no Wifi in Nakhon Nowhere .... and everything in between. For emergency access where there is no Wifi, a GRPS/EDge might be available. Mind that you need a GPRS enabled phone.
October 17, 200817 yr Of course one would not need a mobile telephone to access the Internet, but a suitable AIRCARD. Examples here

October 17, 200817 yr Where is the best place to look for a good memorable number? Excluding MBK. Somewhere with a large stock of sim cards, AIS & DTAC. 7/11's? cheers
October 19, 200817 yr The shopping centers that sell phones and sims maintain lists of all the sims in stock and when I needed a new number the nice lady showed me the list. I stated I was looking for a "lucky" number. These sims will cost more as they are "lucky" or meaningful numbers so you pay a premium.
