Hi all,

These 3 words all mean reason.

But are these words used in different ways?

I know เหตุ and สาเหตุ are used in the same way but สาเหตุ is more official.

But how about เหตุผล? Is this word interchangeable with the other 2 words?

To augment Khun Mangkorn's recommedation and reference to Khun Nan's explanantions, I offer this supplemental material from Ajarn Nawawan Phanthumetha. In "คลังคำ" ("Treasury of Words") Ajarn Nawawan provides the following definitions and examples on pages 892 and 893 of that book.

เหตุ - สิ่งหรือเรื่องที่เกิดผล เช่น อ้างเหตุว่าป่วย, ต้องเสียทรัพย์เพราะความโลภเป็นเหตุ

- Something or some idea which creates a result, for example, "He claimed that he was sick.", "We lost our wealth due to greed."

สาเหตุ - เหตุของการกระทำ เช่น ทะเลาะกันโดยไม่มีสาเหตุ

- The cause of action, for example, "[They] fought one another without cause."

ต้นเหตุ – คนหรือสิ่งที่ทำให้เกิดเหตุเกิดเรื่อง เช่น นางเป็นต้นเหตุให้สามีเสียชีวิต

- A person or thing which causes an action or event, for example, "She was the cause of her husband's death."

มูลเหตุ – เหตุเบื้องต้น เช่น มูลเหตุแห่งการศึกษาภารตวิทยา

- Original cause, for example, "The original source of education was the study of India."

เหตุผล – เหตุของความเชื่อ ความคิด หรือการกระทำ เช่น โกรธโดยไม่มีสาเหตุ

- The reasons for belief, thinking, or action, for example, "He became angry for no reason."

Ajarn Nawawan also has 11 more words in this category of "causation". One of our leanings from this analysis might be that there is no easy one-for-one relationship between the Thai words and the English words in this arena. English words might include "cause", "reason", "motivation", "incentive", etc."

Here is a passage in today's Matichon Weekend regarding the benefits of eating bananas which features the word "มูลเหตุ":

การกินกล้วยเพื่อลดน้ำหนักเป็นกระแสที่กำลังตื่นระบาดไปทั่วประเทศญี่ปุ่นในระยะ 2-3 เดือนที่ผ่านมานี้ . . . . มูลเหตุได้เริ่มมาตั้งช่วงต้นปีเมื่อมีหนังสือหลายเล่มเขียนถึงคุณค่ายิ่งใหญ่ทางโภชนาการของกล้วยหอมทั้งยังเสนอวิธีการลดน้ำหนักด้วยการบริโภคกล้วยหอมเป็นประจำ หนังสือหลายเล่มกลายเป็นหนังสือขายดี

Eating bananas to lose weight has become a new trend which has stirred up (interest) and spread all over Japan during these past two to three months . . . . The primary cause of this trend was the publication of a number of books concerning the great value of consuming bananas as well as recommending ways of losing weight from eating bananas on a regular basis. All these books are selling well.
