I'd like to go to Hong Kong by land or sea from Bangkok, has anbody heard of something like this? Macau would be an acceptable destination as well if they have gambling trips to there.

I'd prefer not to have to change busses multiple times or use a hodgepodge of different services and companies. Ideally a charter package of some kind. Possibly a cruise ship.

Thanks for any tips or advice.

There are numerous passenger carrying container ships calling at Singapore and/or Malaysian ports and Hong Kong and other Chinese ports, possibly 2 a week.

Contact freightercruises.com (california), and/or cruisepeople.co.uk (london).

It is a pleasant, short trip.

Best of luck and if you do it, tell us all about it.

try your luck on starcruises.com- a malay ''crusing''line.

Overland does indeed mean that assembly of local buses+trains+the needed visa (mostly Laos and China-depending on your unrevealed nationlaity). To Vientiane-into China (daily overnight sleeperbus to kuning)-then the ChinaRail experience. its likely shorter via VNam/Hanoi-but that adds an other pre-arranged visa. (Vte-Hanoi daily tourist minibus, then daily daytime bus to nanning/China, then choice of train or bus onward-GuanghZhou-etc. effective travel; time at least 4days+nights

Unless you have plenty of time, why go overland these days. You must the sentimentalist from yester-years.

I find AirAsia solve all my problem. Cheap & quick.

Yes, going overland or sea would be a great experience for some who are so inclined. He didn't ask you to judge his reasons, he asked how he could do it. I'd like to do it too.

:o Google or Yahoo the topic "Overland travel Bangkok to Hong Kong" and you will find overland tours available. There is one offered by a company called BootsnAll Travel Network. It is entirely overland by train or coach, takes 28 days, runs from BKK thru Chiang Mai/Laos/Vietnam/China and on to Hong Kong. I am not recommending this comapny, I have no connection with or knowledge of them. Just using them as an example of what is available.

Find them on the internet at:

http://www.bootsnall.com/adventures/trips-...-adventure.html

There are probably others who offer the same services. You might be able to get it through a travel agent in BKK.

Be warned this trip takes 28 days overland, all by train or coach/bus. Might be a little rough to travel that way, but definately an adventure. According to the company the cost is about 1030 British pounds. Local guesthouse/hotels provided, but be prepared for extra costs/food/etc. Go to the site for the details and latest cost.

You are correct these ships do not call at Bangkok, I did say Malaysia and/or Singapore.

The Cruise People website has 3 Hanjin ships going Port Kelang--Singapore--Hong Kong. Port Kelang is roughly one hour from Kuala Lumpur, both KL and Singapore are easily accessible by bus or train. There are numerous other ships but all make calls at a number of other Chinese ports before Hong Kong.
