Thought I would do a Windows repair just to check my original install is all there and working properly. There seems nothing specifically wrong with my setup but thought it would not hurt to check with the repair option.

According to the info I boot from the install CD and choose the repair option after accepting the license. Well I never got that screen about accepting the license or any option to do a repair. After a few pages of loading various stuff the screen informed me that a version of XP was already loaded and if I continued all data would be lost and overwritten by the new install, no mention at all about any repair.

I have also used “sfc / scannow” a few times to check Windows files are Ok but this now gives me the “Wrong CD please insert the correct disk” warning. This has always worked in the past so can’t understand why it should reject the installation CD now. The CD is not damaged as I did an install on old spare HDD to check.

I have XP Pro with SP3 I seem to remember something about “Corp’ edition but not sure.

I want to avoid a complete Windows reinstall so any ideas outside of that box most welcome.

The best advice is if it works, don't fix it.

Oops, Topdogger beat me to it. :o

Daffy, things is, if you didn't get the EULA screen (End User License Agreement) the CD you use is a different one which was used to install XP!

Or, the CD which was used to install CD was an "real" OEM version, which means one from Asus or NEC or any other company which was modified from that company and could be only use for a "clean" install and NOT for to run a Repair!

Cheers.

Guess it's the Boy Scout in me thought I would try the "Repair" option to see if it would actually work - Be Prepared" :D

While "If it ain't broke don't fix it" has merit no point in enjoying the ignorance of bliss if it does not work when you actually do need it. Guess I found out it does not work for me, got to look for plan "B" :o

Reimar - I hear what you are saying and yes you are correct but I still wonder why "sfc /scannow" will not work now when it did before, there must be something amiss.

Start windows and then insert the original windows disk. It will give you a menu and I think one of these options is a repair.

Having said that I have not ever experienced much success in using windows repair.
