Hi there, i was wondering if any Emule users in Bangkok knew somewhere to get a wireless connection with High ID? Basically my ISP doesn't allow me to forward ports so i'm stuck with slow downloads and low ID.

I know there are plenty of places to get wireless internet, Starbucks etc, but they also seem to block ports. If anybody knows of an unsecure wireless network in Bangkok that allows High ID i would be really grateful. I know some places in Pattaya that give excellent download times and anyone can use for free but not in Bangkok.Thanks.

You won't be able to forward ports on a wireless network that is not yours (unless you plan to hack in the router which would somehow be illegal), so you will still be on a low ID.

But I'm a bit surprised about your ISP not allowing you to forward ports, as the ports forwarding is done on the router, and normally the router is in your home (or is it a shared connection from the building?)

Thanks, Yeti. Sorry, i forgot to mention that i live in a condo building, so the connection is shared. I guess that rules out forwarding the ports. Actually in Pattaya, all i did was log on to an unsecured hotspot and hey presto, i had high ID and fast downloads. No tinkering required. I guess it might be harder to find those type of connections in Bangkok though.

Any suggestions? I'm getting kind of desperate here as the speeds i'm getting are a joke (not even 1 kbps sometimes.) I would definitely consider changing ISP or getting an ADSL line if anyone knew of a provider that allows High ID and reasonable download speeds. I might even try taking my laptop to a decent internet cafe and seeing what sort of speeds i get there.

I use Emule and find it unbelievably slow. :D

I have a dedicated 2Mb line and can download torrents at an average of nearly 200kb/s, the Emule downloads never get above about 8kb/s though the uploads belt along at such a rate I've had to put a limit on them.

I have my ports forwarded and it passes the ports test so I don't really know why my downloads are so slow. Could be the movies I download are old and a bit obscure and I can only find them on Emule, so not many sources. :o

How do I find what my ID is? have looked but can't find any reference to it. Any hints on setting up to get better downloads I basically have everything on default setting.

:D

Make sure there is no limit on your download speed. (Options > Connection.) To check your ID, double click on the small Earth symbol in the bottom right of the Emule screen. High ID is good, Low ID is bad.

Hi ThaiShogun

I have unchecked the download limit box but am limiting the upload as this is always more than my downloads. :o

You won't find much places where you'll get full P2P speeds on a public network for the simple reason that only one user with a P2P program on the network can make the entire connection grind to a halt.

Basically because of the nature of P2P programs opening loads of simultaneous connections.

I do QOS on my network, basically P2P will work, but regular surfing, VOIP, e-mail etc all get priority over P2P so you'll download fast until someone else starts to surf or phone online...

When you get a high ID without actually setting port forwarding in the router means that the router has Upnp active, which is not a smart thing to do on a public network. With Upnp active your P2P client can tell the router which ports to forward automatically, hence the high ID...
