I have used the Nokia 3110C in the past as an EDGE device attached to my laptop via bluetooth, as many people have come to realise this is an excellent, inexpensive phone, which is perfect for using in this way.

However, I recently needed to purchase a cheap phone while I source a replacement battery for my HTC TYTN smart phone, and I discovered the Nokia 2630.

This is actually a cheaper option to the Nokia 3110C for anyone who needs a phone with EDGE and Bluetooth to use as a modem for their laptop.

It doesn't come with a USB connector, but the 3110C doesn't charge from the one it has anyway, meaning there is not much point using it (unless you don't have a bluetooth enabled laptop).

I have tested both and they give exactly the same EDGE performance.

So anyone thinking that 3110C is the way to go for a budget internet enabled phone, you can save yourself 1k Baht by purchasing the 2630 instead.

2630 = 2,600 Baht

3110C = 3,600 Baht

Hi Iam looking for a better option myself, A shop told me that the Nokia N73 uses a 6.2 connection system which is faster how much faster I dont know, but the phone is 10,000 bhat.........is it worth paying the extra...I would sooner take the cheaper option

can you throw some light on this as im not up with all the tech spec

Both the 2630 and the 3110C exhibit the maximum possible EDGE speed available in Thailand, there is no reason at all to buy a more expensive phone unless DTAC or AIS start upgrading their EDGE network to class 12, which is about as likely as hel_l freezing over I would say :o

From GSM Arena -

2630 EDGE Class 6, 177.6 kbps

3110 Classic EDGE Class 10, 236.8 kbps

E 51 EDGE Class 32

I agree that there is no difference in speed between the Class 10 and the class 32 EDGE, but I normally get better than 177.6 from both the class 10 and the class 32.

This info is a little wrong, the 2630 is EDGE class 10 not class 6.

As I mentined previously, I have tested both the 3110C and the 2630 side by side and they offer identical EDGE speeds.

Ahh my bad, I just checked the Nokia site, it's GPRS class 10 EDGE class 6.

I also use a 3110c as a modem USB connection and it works fine but .... very slow :o .

However I think I could make it faster if I knew how to tweak the speed on “TCP Optimizer” utility.

Besides the icon speed showed in my connection 460,8 Kbps I choose (on the “connection speed”) 192 kbps and I set the MTU to – 1500 (TCP receive Window – 21.900).

There’s anyone familiar with these sets to kindly give me an opinion?

I have just starting using my Nokia 2630 for mobile internet on my laptop connected through bluetooth. A "G" symbol comes up at the top when I am connected so I was wondering if it is actually using "EDGE" or just GPRS. I was thinking that maybe this basic phone just shows a "G" for either one. BUT I just saw a friends identical phone and hers has an "E" lit up at the top all the time. Then when I connect to it though bluetooth, the "E" is circled. So now I know that I am obviously just using GPRS although I want to use EDGE.

SO, how do I set up this 2630 phone to use "E" (EDGE) instead of "G"?

It seems to me I had to call AIS and they downloaded a configuration profile to my phone.

Hmmm, normally if the phone detects an Edge network it should automatically use it. If no Edge available it'll fall back to gprs.

There are no user settings, AFAIK you cannot force a phone to use gprs if Edge is available.

When you used your friend's phone, was this in the same location, and with the same provider (AIS or Dtac)?

It's possible your provider only has GPRS coverage at your location...

Bingo! You are right. I just tried my phone in the city where my friends phone had the "E" and here my phone also gets an "E". So I guess up in the village, there is no EDGE available. That is bad news for me!

The just recently got a cell phone tower built close enough to get a signal up there. Before that, they have to use a big roof top antenna to get a cell phone signal. The signal seems strong already, but is there any chance I might get EDGE if I use one of those big antennas?

Thanks for the info!

Signal strength has no influence on whether your phone will use Edge or GPRS.

It will however influence the speed of your connection.

Your best chance would be to try with a sim card from another provider (i.e. Dtac if you use AIS now, or vice versa).

Hello,

Ok I will have to give another provider a try than. I use AIS right now. Is DTAC 2nd best, or how about True or anybody else?

I live out in the boonies. True has no signal. AIS and Dtac both have good signals. In this area Dtac is more dependable. Ais is just as fast when it is working but stalls frequently.

True will most probably not even have signal in the boonies, even if you have service, it'll be likely only gprs.

Dtac is the one you'll have to try. Just pop in a 49 Baht (or something) sim card and see whether you get an E or a G. Also check the signal strength. Edge with 1 bar signal strength will be likely slower then GPRS with full signal!
