Public Health warns of six winter diseases

BANGKOK: -- Public Health Minister Chalerm Yubamrung on Sunday alerted people of six diseases during winter.

According to Pol Capt Chalerm, 515,580 people suffered from influenza, pneumonia, measles, German measles, chicken pox and diarrhea in the previous winter from November 2007 to February 2008, and 315 of them died from the diseases. 442,187 had diarrhea, and 31 of those died. 43,109 contracted pneumonia, and the disease killed 280 of them.

The minister asked youths and old people to be extra careful of their health during winter. He also ordered provincial authorities to quickly educate people on ways to protect themselves from falling ill during cold weather.

Department of Communication Disease Control director-general Somchai Jakraphan said people can easily contract influenza, pneumonia, measles, German measles and chicken pox by coming in contact with airborne viruses from an affected person by way of sneezing and coughing. He advised people to wear protective masks to prevent contractions.
