For all of you folks out there who make the monthly or bi-monthly slog to Mae Sai (and I know that is a lot of you), why not spice it up a little bit? If you are coming through Chiang Rai, take a 15-minute detour to the Lahu village of Ban Jalae to visit the Ban Jalae Hilltribe Life and Culture Center (http://hilltribe.org/museum/01-museum-banjalae.html), located adjacent to Huay Mae Sai Waterfall.

The Culture Center is located in an animist Red Lahu village and has artifacts donated by the villagers. There is also a small theatre (powered by solar cells) where you can watch a video presenting the tribes of the area. Visiting the Culture Center, village and waterfall is a relaxing and informative way to spend a couple of hours.

To get there, take a left as soon as you cross the Kok River bridge leaving Chiang Rai on the highway for Mae Sai, then just follow the signs.
