Uk Observer Newspaper - Sunday Review Womens Special

Featured Replies

Haven't posted for some time and not sure of this is the most relevant place - please move if felt necessary !

I saw a copy of the last Sundays Observer Newspaper which had a special issue in the review section on women and there were some statements made regarding women in many countries. When I read what they had to say about Thailand, I found it quite simply unbelievable and quite degrading and negative toward Thailand and Thai women. Now, I am not female, but have lived in Thailand for some time and have some idea of what goes on, but the Observer statement just cannot be correct.

The Sunday Observer stated :

"Thailand

Prostitution accounts for a third of the Thai economy, which supports 2.8m female prostitutes."

Personally, I find this ludicrous and degrading to Thais and Thailand.

On Cambodia they stated :

"Cambodia

Has 55000 prostitutes, one third of whom are under 18"

Now this may well be the case.

It is a shame that the alternative side is not shown. I have seen that many organization would simply not function without the involvement of women. Further, I was overwhelmed by the number of female staff in the science faculties in a Thai University.

In Thailand I have seen women work very hard to achieve a goal, which may potentially be easier to achieve for a man and I admire them for that !

I find it is a shame that women from Thailand may be typecast by the western world in certain roles when I have known them to be some of the most intelligent, versatile and determined people I have met. However, as in many places, realizing their full potential is a challenge.

I totally agree with you Bob. That article was very odd...choosing the worst figures and the best figures to do with women's rights arbitrarily and therefore portraying that nation in a negative or positive way at whim. Rwanada for instance had a comment about how it has the most number of female MPs in parliament. No mention about the abuse women received during the genocide. I din't like that piece. Just goes again to portray Thailand as a sex destination. And is it REALLy a 3rd of the thai economy?

how do you know it's NOT a 3rd of the Thai economy? i agree they should not focus on only that side of things, but come on, prostitution is ridiculously prevalent in all walks of society here. it IS the main reason lots of men visit Thailand too. no point in dressing up those facts. i doubt the article said "every thai girl you see is probably a prostitute".

Given studies in the past, it is highly unlikely it is a third of the economy, unless things have changed drastically in the past ten years.

Size

The illegal economy is large. According to our (deliberately conservative) estimates, the six activities generated 286-457 thousand million baht of value added per annum in the period 1993-5. The figure is equivalent to 8-13 percent of GNP. The largest contributor was gambling, followed by prostitution, drug trafficking, diesel oil smuggling, trafficking labour, and trading in contraband arms.

These figures do not include a host of other illegal activities, such as trafficking of people to third countries, smuggling goods other than diesel oil, trading in protected animals and plants, illicit logging, and other forms of unlawful gambling (illegal bookmaking on horse racing and boxing, billiard halls, the stock market lottery, etc.) If these were included, the figure size may be as large as 20 percent of GNP.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Estimates of the Size of the Illegal Economy in Thailand 1993-5

Value added

(billion baht/year)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drug trafficking 28-33

Trading in contraband arms 6-31

Diesel oil smuggling 9

Prostitution in Thailand 100

Trafficking in people 5-7

Illegal gambling 138-277

- underground lottery (81-98)

- football gambling (12-16)

- casinos (45-163)

Total 286-457

Regardless, the point here is the media's need to focus on sensationalistic articles designed to sell ads.

You don't have to signal a social conscience by looking like a frump. Lace knickers won't hasten the holocaust, you can ban the bomb in a feather boa just as well as without, and a mild interest in the length of hemlines doesn't necessarily disqualify you from reading Das Kapital and agreeing with every word. ~Elizabeth Bibesco

Well, I don't see any reason to allow this to continue to run. It borders on breaking one of admin's very specific rules about discussing prostitution and will most likely just lead to trolls posting here instead.
