Raising A Female Child In Male Dominated Thai Society

Are you one of these "gender equality" people who would call a guy a loser and don´t hesitate to laugh, when he gets his life trashed by a female, and scream patriarchy and oppression when a female gets ripped off and played by a guy?

I hope not.

No, of course not. Perhaps the West favors women. If that is the case, than it would still seem that I would be better off raising my daughter in Sweden than in Thailand.

And I think there are bigger issues at play here than infidelity. We still have not touched on potential glass ceilings in Thai society

There is no such thing as glass ceilings and patriarchy, its just a bunch of fairy tale stories, one of the main reason these terms exists in first place, is because some less intelligent, feminist completely failed to see the difference between opportunity and outcome.

Well, its not a secret that very few Thai males are faithful to their wife. You are hard pressed to find a soi in this country without a brothel on it. Its more or less expected and accepted that Thai men of status will have women on the side, if not another wife altogether.

Now, this leads to the issue of raising a female in this country. Chances are, she will end up marrying a Thai male, who will obviously be very likely to fall into the subset described above. If you were to raise her in the West, where this type of male behavior is not as accepted, it is more likely that her husband will be faithful to her.

Has anyone considered this aspect of raising a female child in Thailand? I do not have children yet, but I feel like I would much rather raise a male in this country than a female. And it is not my intention to turn this into a debate on the morality of men being unfaithful, but rather to examine the advantages and disadvantages of raising a a female child in this country.

And I would also like some comments on how women are treated in the workplace and potential glass ceilings which currently exist in Thailand as compared to the West. Perhaps, some of the advantages we men have here will be disadvantages to our daughters.

Its all depend on education. You must teach her to be confident, independent and self esteem, teach her that a woman should always be financially independent and must see that she NEVER have to financially depend on a man.Even when she married she must pursue her career, and be financially independent, because its more easy to find a man than a good job. Its better to have a boy friend than a husband, and its better he stay with her than she stay with him, so she can throw him out any time she likes.

Teach her that the most important person in life is herself and not some man.

Let her read some books of Germaine Greer and Marylin French.

Show her examples of women who give up there job and now left behind with children.

So teach her to self confident, financially independent, and if she like to have children later in life she must be sure that she don't need a man to support them.

maybe some people wills say this is raising a selfish b""ch, no it isn't, and I can know it. I'm married with such kind of woman for more than 30 years and I never see a more carrying and loving person in my life. And after all this time she is still an intellectual challenge for me. And I know she stay with me because she love me and not because she is financially protected.

btw;glass ceilings still exists in the western world also. And still women in the west have to be twice as capable and work twice as hard to prove themselves. On the surface the seems to achieved a lot regarding emancipation, but when you look a little bit deeper they are still like in the song of John Lennon " women are the niggers of the world".

Germain Greer wrote the feminist book

The female Eunuch

30years later she wrote an sequel of that book, where she proved that despite some progress in some way's women situation is more worse and far more denigrated on the sexual level than 30 years ago.'( sorry I forgot the name of that book) but is was a choker to me.

Sorry to disappoint the op but western men have just as much opportunity to cheat & do so, as Thai men. In both Thailand & other countries. It is only the mans own character that will stop him. If you have a daughter I would suggest raising her to have self respect & the ability to look after herself so that if she meets a man (Thai or otherwise) she has the strength & ability to walk away should they cheat or treat her badly. The problem most women have is being unable to walk away due to financial limits & having kids or believing they deserve to be treated badly (lack of confidence). IME a women with that kind of strength & resolve will not usually meet men who would treat her with that kind of disregard & disrespect in the first place. I kwow I never have & yes, my husband is Thai & is a wonderful & great father too :D

As for glass ceilings & opportunities for women in Thailand in general, IMO the country has a long way to go, so raising a strong, opinionated & educated daughter & teaching her not to be controlled or limited by these ancient prejudices might be a good thing for Thailand in the long run, esp if she uses that learning to improve things. :D

I have 2 daughters and would have chosen it to be that way. They will have many many more advantages than I have here.

True, in many workplaces they would be discriminated against for being female.

I've told them always how Thai guys are inferior to Western guys and hopefully when it come marriage time they'lll be brainwashed.

With a racist attitude like that, I am sure they will be brainwashed. How dare you use words like inferior when talking about human beings.

Well, this thread has certainly brought out the holiday spirit. We get racist comments, misogynist comments, discussion of prostitution, and just general aggressiveness.

Seems to me that it is difficult for some posters to keep this thread within the forum rules.
