Product Description

With a gorgeous widescreen display, the Garmin nüvi 660 GPS Personal Travel Assistant is your answer to the call of adventure. A sleek navigator and a keen travel assistant, the nüvi 660 is preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions, and the data is provided by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping. This preloaded navigator brings all this fantastic map data to your fingertips with a super-bright, 4.3-inch widescreen display for improved map viewing, day or night. Use the touch screen interface to select destinations, look up POIs, and play your favorite MP3s and audio books. The display also helps you control hands-free calling, traffic alerts, and the FM transmitter, all from the screen of your personal travel assistant.

Which nüvi is Best for You?: to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators

Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

Widescreen -- See Better, See More

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

FM Transmitter -- Hear Better, Hear More

Instead of straining your ears to hear turn-by-turn directions or your favorite MP3s, you can enjoy wireless FM audio transmission via the nüvi 660's wireless FM transmitter. Tune your car's radio to the appropriate station and you'll hear all the nüvi's audio, including voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle's stereo system. The nüvi 660 includes many "must-have" entertainment and travel tools, including digital music and audio book playback, JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, and more. All these great features make the nüvi 660 a complete Personal Travel Assistant.

First Rate Map Data

The nüvi 660 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

In addition, the nüvi 660 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our

Hands-Free Calling

In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi 660's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Integrated FM Traffic Receiver

Steer clear of traffic with an integrated FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with purchase of this device. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the

Easy To Use Interface

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Beyond Navigation

Browse your stored pictures with an easy-to-use JPEG viewer. A handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards.

Navigation is just the beginning. The nüvi 660 features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, MP3 player, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.

This device is compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras.

Trick Your GPS Ride

Custom vehicle icons let you ride in style, at least inside your GPS.

All Garmin nüvis support configurable vehicle icons. These fun, customized car-shaped icons come in a variety of colors to add a personal touch to your vehicle's position on the map.

With this GPS system on board you'll be prepared to steer clear of traffic with the integrated FM TMC traffic receiver. The nüvi 770 is designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

What's in the Box

nüvi 660 GPS navigation system, preloaded City Navigator North, America NT data, vehicle suction cup mount, A/C charger, carrying case, FM traffic receiver/12-volt adapter with 3-month free trial subscription, dashboard disk, USB interface cable, sample language guide content (preloaded), sample travel guide, sample MP3s (preloaded), sample audio books (preloaded), owner's manual, and a quick reference guide.

Notes

Optional software for language translation, detailed travel guides, and savings programs allow you to customize your nüvi to fit your travel needs

The FM transmitter feature is only available in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

This nüvi comes with a free, three-month trial for MSN Direct services.

Like most USB Mass Storage Devices, the nüvi is not compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me.

Product Description

See more and explore with nvi 660. This widescreen travel companion and navigator features preloaded maps, hands-free calling, traffic alerts, FM transmitter and more. Like the rest of the wide nvi 600-series, its large touchscreen display puts the world at your fingertips.

The Nuvi 660 is a good unit. It has the flip up antenna which is no longer used. The 660 is now obsolete and no longer made. That's not a big deal. I have a Nuvi 750 which has the internal antenna, FM transmitter and MP3 player. I don't really like bluetooth and the traffic information is useless in Thailand.

The Nuvi 660 is not suitable for a motorcycle. The Nuvi and the Zumo are like comparing apples and oranges.

I have no idea about that company. Why don't you have a look on eBay? They have hundreds of Garmin devices listed. That will give you an idea about pricing.

Thinks Gary I will probably stay with the firs unit, just thought this was worth checking out a bit.

Its no secret that garmin are made in china, however i would suspect it of being a copy, or a con, however i know for a fact that some goods coming out of china are actually original but branded differently!, i had this with acerbis and pro-taper bars for bikes, its an absolute minefield, :o

The flip up antenna works well but appears to be a little bit fragile and I think motorcycle vibration would kill it quickly. The newer Nuvi models have the internal antenna.

Yep scarey stuff I will probably just get the legend fo 17K and move on. Unless I run across some who has first hand s experience with this company.

For around 20.000 you will be able to buy a new zumo 550 on ebay.

Can't get an e bay account wouldn't give it to ,me with a Thailand address.

Well I looked up the retail sights for them it included Home Depot, they are all over California. My friend is in Texas dontl know if they have them there or not. He went back for his Fathers death. So I dontl want ot bother him righ bnow, Even retail you can get them there for 500 to 600 dollars. Thats a darn sight better then 1150.

$200 for loading maps it's a good deal and it won't be knock off.

The asking price for the garmin 550 with buletoothe capabilites and map is 41K baht

What you guys think?

I think those prices are outrageous.

It depends what you want your GPS unit for? Do you want a ruggedized outdoor unit that can just turn on or off with little other effort needed then pay up the money and go for a corporate brand name like Garmin?

For me I just bought a 60$ generic bluetooth GPS antenna/receiver that slips in my pocket whenever I need it, can post process and geo tag any photos I may take with my generic digital camera or find my way real time by opening a free map, there are loads on the net to use, on my PDA/phone.

I have a zumo550 and love it, use it in the truck and on the bike, its also tough ,came off on a dirt track at 80k and it went 200 yds down the road,( it fared better than i did !,).battery life is poor, needs live feed really,

Zumo 550 no doubt the best for bikes. But I agree 41K is outrageous.

50% lese in the states.

I'll find a way. E-bay won't let me sign up becasue of my Thailand address.

What I dont like about the zumo is the need to have it hardwired and lack of battery...

I picked up a 60csx.. It does the routing I need.. All the geotagging of pics and the usual GPS stuff.. But I can pop it off the bike, use it as a handheld unit on any city trips, etc etc etc.. Very much like the dual purpose aspect.

If I just wanted a GPS for the car, it wouldnt be my choice.. But for a GPS for car, bike, foot, pic tagging.. Its a great tool.

I use Citibank and they have a free bill pay deal. I have bought several items off eBay by having my bank send them a check. You can send a message to the seller and explain how you want to pay. Most sellers will accept a bank check. I will NEVER use pay pal again.

  • Author

I'm checking wih my friend who is on my states side account and seeing if he has an E-bay account. If he does I get the Zumo 550 with the maps for Thailand for about 22K much better.

Then he can just write himself a check adn ship it me via UPS.

I'll find a way.

Thanks

Gary

Dont forget that the maps are easily 'findable' online..

Ill get you one off my ebay if you want ray, pm me,.

If i ask my friend in the states to buy and send me a zumo via UPS to my po box here in thailand.

Would i get hit for any duties, if he takes it out of the box and just sends the unit.

Is that the way or is there better method guys, your opinions would be appreciated(44k is daylight robbery)

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys I think I have it worked out now. Tax got me.

The last two electronic items I got off eBay, They hit me up for 30 percent plus VAT. One was shipped FedEx and the other UPS. They delivered them right to my front door but wouldn't release the packages until I paid the duty and VAT. If you can get someone to hand carry whatever you want to buy, you can save quite a bit. Have them take the device out of the box and unwrap everything so it looks used. If it is new, they may get hit for duty and VAT at the airport.

Yes sent via couriers I ALWAYS get hit..

Sent via normal USPS it comes in most of the time.. I also ask for a 20 USD value declaration and it comes under the tax bracket.

The problem is that I would be afraid to have something shipped that wasn't insured. Most eBay sellers won't invoice for less than the value because of the insurance.

Most eBay sellers will only ship to your registered paypal address too.

Does anyone know how to register in Thailand?

I would totally go with the one LivinLOS bought. CS something.

Hi,

The Thai maps are actually produced in Bangkok by ESRI THailand at www.esrith.com who also sell the Garmin receivers. The current Thailand version from is 8.1 but 8.0 may be more stable.

You may want to check at www.gadgetrend.com They are authorized Garmin dealers as I recall. The prices may or may not be great but they are in Bangkok and will include the Thailand maps.

You can also contact [email protected] (www.dynatrend-thai.com) or call Art at 02-719-2787 as he also sells Garmin in Bangkok and other areas of Thailand. Apparently affiliated with GadgeTrend somehow.

By all means shop for the best price as some severly overcharge. Also, they may charge extra to buy/install Thai maps on receivers not purchased from them.

The "online" versions of the Thailand maps can be a challenge to get working if you are not a technical person. Not brain surgery but could be a deal breaker for some. TIT

As already mentioned the 660 is is out of production although it is still being widely sold. You might consider a Nuvi 260 or 260W (currently about $150) as you will not be able to use the features of the more expensive units in Thailand anyways. The Zumi 550 is much more expensive.

Whatever you decide be sure and do your homework prior to purchasing and GPS.

BTW, Had an rather expensive digital camera sent to Thailand via FEDEX several years ago and the previous estimate of about 30% extortion fee seems about right. :-) I've also heard some claim much higher fees.

Good hunting and feel free to contact me here or via PM if desired and we can take it to email (encouraged) where I may be of more help.

Don

My ESRI map version 8.1 works fine and one big item is that it has the newest Bangkok Kanchanaphisek bridge on it. Not really a big deal but if you are in that area of Bangkok, it could save you a lot of driving through a very congested area.

I also agree that Art at Gadgetrend is great to work with. The Gadgetrend service is excellent. Their prices have also dropped drastically (specials) for some items in the past few months. The latest map is now 7,000 baht down from 12,000 baht. That is still expensive but it entitles you to one free update and I think after the free update, updates after that are 1,200 baht. They normally update one a year.
