Police May Cut Thaksin's Rank

So they are still playing 'Pass the Hot Potato'? Do the Executive ever execute anything?

I'm just wondering why all the panjandrums sport those pretty decortions. "Well this one is for prevaricating, this one for sitting on my hands, this one for passing the buck, this one is for saying "Tut,Tut", this one is for following the herd, this one is for establising hundreds of committees, this one is for ensuring that the committees meet at intervals of at least 6 months - and this one for doing absolutely bugger all."

Self aggrandisment gone mad. Could it be that they sport all these baubles so that they are not mistaken for ice cream salesmen?

It is probably like the armed forces in Thailand.

No one ever retires, they still draw a salary........ <img src="http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bah.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="bah.gif" />

Which might go some way to explain why they didn't care for Thaksins vision of a smaller, streamlined and more professional army <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Still, looking on the bright side they probably won't need to conscript any more troops if they ever go to war with Cambodia over disputed territory. Plenty of officers of senior rank to lead the bayonet charge over the top.

My gut feeling is that they would be rushing in the opposite direction. :)

It took the government long enuff to finally take this action. Several reasons have been presented for the lapsed time but as you pointed out, this is a double whammy to Thaksin because it dovetails with the pardon request which we know will be denied regardless of whether sooner or later.

...

Actually Abhisit and Suthep DENIED some rumours that the government did, do and will do anything to revoke Thaksins police rank.

And how long has it been since his conviction?

Coincidentally, as of today, it's been 600 days since he was convicted and sentenced to 2 years in prison for corruption.

Incidentally, it's also been 682 days since Potjaman was convicted and sentenced to 3 years in prison for tax evasion.

Neither has served any time on these convictions.

Why does he need a rank? He is not a copper any more.

My guess is he might be receiving a pension. Not that he needs it. And how long has it been since his conviction? ??????

Just another sop or slap at his deflated ego. He is ego driven.

He has 'rank'. For an obsesive social climber like Thaksin,

loss of rank hurts as much as loss of money.

The police lieutenant colonel rank does a lot for Thaksin's prestige, even though most Thais claim to hate their police. Actually Thaksin left the force as a lowly captain and was hardly ever involved in any real police duties due to the connection with his father-in-law, a bigshot police general. He spent most of his service doing his masters and Phd abroad, acting as an aide for his politician father and uncle and finally running his own businesses. These failed one after the other and he was technically bankrupt until he stumbled on the philosopher's stone by getting appointed the procurement committee for police main frame computers that he was tendering to and writing the specification for the tender himself. When he became PM the police honoured him by promoting long after retirement by two ranks which is the maximum post retirement promotion allowed in the regulations. (Of course he would have loved to have been a general like his pa-in-law.)

Since the rank is an honorary one, not earned, it should be done away with forwith, now that Thaksin is a fugitive from Thai justice and has been charged with terrorism. The police was asked to look into stripping him of rank early on in the Abhisit govt but managed to avoid taking action. At the very least they should do away with the honorary promotion and bust him back to his actul retirement rank of captain.

and for how many days the police is considering to stripping his rank of?

nearly same same:

they do that since court found that Pol. Lt-Col. Thaksin had violated Article 100 and Article 102 of the National Counter Corruption Act, which states that government officials and their spouses are prohibited from entering into or having interests in contracts with state agencies.

<b>Thaksin may lose his rank</b>

Police are considering stripping former PM Thaksin Shinawatra of his rank of Lieutenant-Colonel for his conviction in the Ratchadaphisek land purchase case. Police spokesman Police Lieutenant-General Watcharapol Prasarnratchakit said the disciplinary division and human resources office, among others, were studying the move. He said they would have to wait for 30 days before proceeding as Thaksin, convicted of violating the anti-graft law, could appeal if he can produce new evidence.

meanwhile the government is very busy too. Using all means to get Pol. Lt-Col. Thaksin. Full power since at least April 2009.

RUNAWAY EX-PM

Govt using all means to corner Thaksin

By Supalak Ganjanakhundee, The Nation,

Published on April 28, 2009

The government is taking every possible step to narrow the political space fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's has on the globe by using the Interpol and other diplomatic moves to corner him, a senior government official said yesterday.

...

Two weeks ago, the government told Interpol to blacklist Thaksin and arrest him if they can, he said.

Thai authorities have also sent arrest warrants against Thaksin to all concerned countries, he said.

In addition, the foreign ministry has informed all nations that have diplomatic relations with Thailand about Thaksin's movements and the government's concerns, he said.

...

However, Panich said, what passport Thaksin travels with is not important. He explained that as long as the former PM uses his own name, his appearance in any country would show up on Interpol's radar and he will be under surveillance in host countries.

The government is closely monitoring Jakrapob Penkair's movements, though his whereabouts are still unknown, Panich said. The Immigration Bureau has no records on Jakrapob's departure, he said.

Good Luck to all involved. Keep it up!

I agree the police have been as negligent in fulfilling their duties as much as Thaksin has delayed his inevitable incarceration.

Lets get to the bottom of the picture:

- The police are in fact accountable to their own brotherood and not accountable to the public. This is of course unacceptable, but it is the reality.

- The police brotherhood stands by it's members regardless of what they have done in the past including criminal actions and/or convictions. Not the values that I was brought up to believe in, but reality.

- The police internal administration is to a major extent closed. in fact they will fight to the end to keep it this way, because it includes practices which they know will be severly criticised and could even bring proecutions for corruption, graft etc.

- Thaksin in his era gave numerous very very generous donations to the police as a whole and to specific individuals. He bought their loyalty and they haven't forgotten.

- Any senior officer who openly supports removing the rank from thaksin is a pretty brave man.

- On the other hand, I believe that PM Abhisit will in the near future push ahead with strong changes to the police which will see many heads roll and a lot of new procedures: recruitment, promotion, reward, and more. Let's face it, right now the ball is in Abhisits court and He's no fool, I doubt that he will let the opportunity pass.

Following rules, regulations and the law of the land take time, dear Mazeltov. If PM Abhisit was the dictator some have it, this would have been done already. So what's your complaint here ?

dude, did you read scorecards post? he is blaming the police for doing nothing, meanwhile Abhist also had achieved nothing, you are starting now to excuse Abhisit because the law takes time. Wouldn't that excuse also valid for the police actions that looks like doing nothing?

Lets face it, nobody is doing here anything that brings results and is a success.

Your last sentence has too much of the 'obvious' which needs to be pointed out yet again.

:):D:D A statement like that you can only expect from the Thai government.

With statements like that (of K. Panich) I can't help wondering what got lost in translation. Or does K. Panich have to go to school again ?

actually everything what Khun Panich said that day is total laughable. and it demonstrates that these Abhisit government officials have no clue. for example no clue how Interpol works.

Anyway, there are still people who think the Government is doing a good job and believing all that BS.

No surprise:

"It's under review is it? Rome wasn't built in a day, eh Sir Humphrey? These things take time, do they?" :D
