Tide of donations swells to help tsunami victims

BANGKOK: -- Members of the Thai public today continued to unleash a wave of donations to help the victims of the tsunami, with 25 military vehicles packed with provisions setting off to the south from Bangkok.

Fifteen Air Force trucks and 10 Army trucks filled with consumer goods, medicine, formalin, shrouds, coffins and other urgent supplies were due to set off for Krabi and Phang-nga provinces this afternoon, while this morning an Air Force plane took survivors from Phuket to Bangkok to receive medical treatment.

Corpses are likely to be transported on planes belonging to Thai Airways, which has offered the use of refrigerated units.

At the Air Force’s Disaster Relief Centre, donations continued to flood in throughout the day, with cash donations alone now totalling Bt2 million.

Restaurant owners meanwhile are being encouraged by the Ministry of Public Health to send food and kitchen supplies to the afflicted provinces to ensure that the survivors receive adequate food.
