Home Delivered Thai Bbq. Now I've Seen It All!

Featured Replies

As always time went so quickly on my last trip to Thailand.

Village life can be quite exhausting, with stints in the rice paddies harvesting rice, 3.00am trips to the local market to get the freshest bugs, and visits to the jungle (bush) in search of young bamboo, frogs and anything else edible.

On my second last night I treated my girlfriend to a Thai Barbeque in Kham Ta Kla township.

Whilst enjoying our feast I witnessed the staff loading a scooter with hot coals, kettle, thai bbq plate and foodstuffs.

Blow me down, it was a home delivery Thai BBQ.

I've seen many types of home delivered fast foods in my time but the thought of a home delivered bbq with hot coals was a new experience.

Maybe western countries can learn from these guys.

I've attached a photo of the specially modified scooter designed to carry the gear.

That must be a posh company.

Here they just carry the BBQs on the motorbike already lit.

Same in Phon too LB, guy sat behind driver with the coals burning in the bbq pot whizzing along to deliver :o posh indeed.

I don't think they were posh.

The coals were burining hot with this crowd also.

Storing them in one of the metal panniers meant that labour costs are reduced.

No need for a p[assenger holding the coals.

Ah, but the important question is, how good was the food?? The Thai bbq I have had - delivered the same way - was delicious, especially the soup part. Yum!

You're right.

The quality of Thai BBQ's can vary considerably.

That night it was 6 out of 10. Quite good.

At another venue in this town the meat from dreadful.

Harldy any flesh and the raw meat was presented in a dish with water.

Presumaby to hide the smell.

The best ever bbq included prawns and calamari as well as beef, chicken, bacon, liver and eggs.

Posh? Well I suppose 'port out starboard home' might be relevant when the heat starts to burn the poor chap's leg and he has to switch sides. But seriously the wife says that this arrangement is quite common and is available where we stay. Our local version involves 'neua yang gouree' (Korean style meats and soup). The business will send the man back in the morning to pick up the BBQ.

For some reason the locals in my village refer to this as "Barbeque Korea". We dine at the house this way at least twice a week... together with drinks it's a wonderful way to bring the family together! Often before or after the main course we substitute a small flat grill over the coals and grill asparagus, zucchini, prawns, clams, dried-rolled squid, sticky rice burgers (coated with egg) or whatever else comes to mind. We still roll-out the Weber once and a while... but this way is much more fun since everyone gets to cook!

Agreed and that is why we put it all together at home so we can enjoy choice cuts and skip the innards.

Another critical component is the dipping sauce... we can't quite get it right at home and the popular restaurants closely guard their recipes... sometimes we just go to a restaurant to buy the dipping sauce alone. The best dipping sauce recipes always seem have loads of garlic in them (and chilies of course)... but beyond that I don't know how they make it.

Same down here in Buriram, when the motorsai is speeding along with a BBQ either side and sparks flying out the back it looks like the afterburners are on!! :D

TBWG :o
