Xangsamhua
ABC News reports (below) that a young Australian boy was nearly killed recently by a jellyfish at a Thai beach (unnamed). The report suggests that these accidents generally go unreported. Is that true? The boy was saved by a quick-thinking chef from a nearby resort who doused the wound in vinegar. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/01/31/2479110.htm
neverdie
There was an article in the media the other day about this. It hasnt been a normal thing but apparently the box jellyfish is moving into new waters as the climate changes or something like that. There was some mention of it in a post the other week but I can't remember where. You don't want to get stung by one of those boys. In far north Qld Australia they wear stingsuits or at least ladies pantihose when swimming....doesnt help with the crocs much Maybe we will see the thais doing the same soon? dumball
As noted by posters on earlier TV threads , these monsters have been in Thai waters for several years , nobody seems to have given them much credence , bad for tourism as apposed to tourists . neverdie
What areas are these jellyfish known to be in? Previous reports I believe were on Phuket. Do a thai visa search, theres half a dozen different threads.
HorseDoctor
The death was in Krabi where it is rumored to not be the first , or second or third, but as tourism reigns supreme, or rather the money it brings in ,over and above human life or safety -it is not widely reported. Box jellly fish, the very poisonous, deadly kind have since been found on the east side of Phuket and just about 2 weks ago there were hundreds if not thousands of another, less venomous species all over the west coast beaches . About 6 weeks ago the beach at Bang Tao had warning signs for jelly fish and the water was infested with sea lice I was in about 15 minutes and got stung at least a dozen times and still have the tiny red marks.
