If Your Son Commited A Crime In Thailand

I'd pay to make it go away, just like any of you guys would.

For instance, how many guys here drive whilst over the legal limit for alcohol, if you had an accident where there was a fatality and you could either go to Jail for 10 years or pay money to make it go away, what would you do ?

Yeah yeah, I know, ThaiVisa members never ever drink and drive, ever !! :D

But in the real world many Farangs do and if money could bring about a swift resolution to the problem, they would pay, just like a rich Thai would.

Guilty rich people in the USA can hire the top defence lawyers to get them off of convictions on a technicality and the poorer guys go to Jail.

The silence is deafening. :o

Maybe YOU were just being IGNORED AGAIN! :D

why put drug dealing with murder Heng?

Well David, a wise make-believe man once said...

"It's true, I have a lot of friends in politics. But they wouldn't be so friendly if they knew my business was drugs instead of gambling which they consider a harmless vice but drugs, that's a dirty business."

Suppose it was your son who ran down that group of people at the bus station because he lost his temper and you were also in a financial position to make the problem go away. Would you do it or would you allow the police to take him away for a life imprisonment?

Interesting question.

Everyone has their own views on what should be done with captured criminals.

But when a situation affects one personally or it`s a member of ones own family, than suddenly the morals change.

Definetely would pay up. Actually the fact my kids -or myself- might go to jail in my home country because we drive over a bunch of people while drunk and speeding, even though those people are labour or reek of pralaa or behave like MTV gangstas or whatever is one of the very very few things I prefer about life in Thailand.

How would someone consider a bunch of stranger's lives over his own blood's welfare is an alien concept.

The problem here is that everyone is missing the basic point, It is easy to pay money here and make it go away, but it will keep happening because of the nature of this society.

Whether you turn him in or not wont make a dam_n difference because thai hi-so's will always believe they can make a problem go away with money....and they are right.

regards

I guess its basic game theory, huh?

These types of questions are painful because the immature will use them as justification for nihilism.

I don't care what kind of problems a child might have, or how improper parenting might have warped him- nothing justifies murder of defenseless pedestrians from behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Off to jail.

Life in prison - that would be a judicial decision, not up to the cops - but okay, assuming the court outcome was going to be life imprisonment (that has never happend in Thailand before for mansluaghter has it?) - I would pay the money.

Actualy, while financial remittnace in leu of prison may be an alien concept in Western legal thought, in Asia it is as acceptable as the rights a murdered persons relatives have to commute the death sentance of a condemed man in many Middle Eastern societies.

Paying up has long been an accepted way to address problems in Asian society. I think the question then should extend to asking wether or not the bereaved relatives are happy with such a settement. Your argument suggests that it would be the police who would say yes or no - with no imput from the bereaved relatives. A case like this would only be considered by the cops with the agreement of the relatives - their co-operation and agreement would be needed, because without which there would be nothing to stop them from proceeding with a private prosecution!.

So yes - if all parties were happy with the idea, why not.
