Pete, they'll never get away with banning it. Did you notice how this all neatly times with the announcement of a budget deficit. With less people smoking these days, one of their greatest sources of revenue is starting to dry up, so now they'll start taxing high salt and sugar foods with the justification of it being a health strategy. They know, just as with the situation applying to smokers, the die hards will still want their jam and Vegemite spreads on their toast of a morning, so they'll whack on a tax which they'll progressively increase. Australia: Get me outta here!!!

But it's the portion size that is important not the salt percentage, otherwise ban powdered salt for being 100% salt and powered sugar etc.

Yes, subjects like this are used to smoke screen the public via media manipulation.

No fan myself, but these health freaks are beginning to scare me! Where will it all stop? Might as well ban candy, beer, cold cuts (ham has a high salt content), bread, meat, and a gazillion other things whilst they are at it (or put a high tax on them, which seems to be the whole idea in the first place).

Good point. After they're done banning sweets, biscuits, cakes, soft drinks, cordials, bacon, sausages, mince, etc... then they can ban flour, butter, lard, sugar, honey, salt, cocoa and most other base ingredients and spices. I never cease to be amazed about how the kumbaya choir have no touch with reality and insist on foisting their naive and inane views on the majority.

The beginning of prohibition on Vegemite and jam, that will send the CWA broke. You'll have the cops up at their fundraising stalls for a shake down. "So, Mrs Smith, I believe your rosella jam this year has a 50% sugar content, you'll be going home in the back of a divvy van!!" Gimmee a break .... Its just a media stunt, if they actually tried it, god help them... no one else would.

Yes, but it's not just Kraft - they're all at it. Competition. These days, when looking at competing products, you'll often see small variations in the actual quantities even though the containers seem similar.

But I'm with SBC (re the pies/pasties/snag rolls/Chiko rolls/fatburgers/pizzas). Will all the fish and chip shops be suddenly erecting 'CLOSED' signs? Will one not be able to buy a freshly prepared donut or danish pastry at the local bakery? The more you think about this jumped up committee, the more of a stunt it seems to be. Imagine how bare your supermarket would look without all the shelves of potato chips (crisps), sweets, biscuits, cake and desert mixes, et, etc. Perhaps they'll replace these items with apples and oranges? This committee is clearly going to achieve absolutely nothing other (perhaps) than imposing a new tax (and the press release was about softening us up for it) and/or imposing further restrictions in school tuck shops. No wonder this government's budget has gone into the red - if funding of all these kumbaya choir committees is any indication of their spending prowess.

Thaskin has a better chance of being re-elected to Prime Minister than these idiots have trying to destroy an Aussie icon. If you believe any of this crap you obviously belong in Thailand continuing to support the sick buffalo and the dreaded brother (or was that lover) that has fallen on hard times.

I agree with you, but it should be, "What we "may" or "may" not eat."

We can eat anything, but MAY we, according to these pestillence corps idiots, not allowed.

They need to get into the real world,

They say the salt (8%) is too high.

With the servings of marmite or vegemite being so small, the salt content would equal one large potato crisp.

People with a mission to make life sterile and miserable.
