Similan Islands

Featured Replies

Does anybody have information on the Similan Islands, particularly Koh Mieng? Khao Lak was damaged badly and the SI's would be right in the line of fire.

I was there in May and fear for the people who work there and the people in tents just off the beach!

Yes, I was thingking the same thing. The news keeps mentioning how "remote" islands have not even been assessed yet. Which islands could they be talking about?

I also know people on Ko Lipe and in the Tartauro Marine Park. Has there been word on these islands?

You might be able to get some info at http://www.similantour.com/

There is an email address on their site. Their bungalows are open although some were destroyed and their restaurant has been rebuilt or at least they can make food now. I did not ask about their dive boat when I talked with them a few days ago but I think it is OK.

Most of the coral reef were damaged in some islands, but not all. Recently, the team of marine biologists from Kasetsart U. went there and did the primary assetment in Similan Islands. They found that, in some area, the coral reef were totally wiped out. Coral reef in Ko Bpaat and Ko Gaao are covered with undersea sand and they're dying. It's so sad.
