New Toshiba Notebook Without Os / Won't Take Xp

Hi All,

it looks like Microsoft gets a little help from hardware makers. My attempts to install XP were unsuccessful.

I have no idea of the verification by Vista and whether one can buy a used OS on eBay and be legit. Or whether the vendors offer a cheap alternative.

What would you do? Make sure your new notebook has an OS installed!

Go into CMOS setup on your PC.

Set the SATA controller mode to ATA, Legacy, IDE (or something similar, depends on the BIOS).

XP will then happily install.

Thought I would ask this question here, as I have a Toshiba L40 satellite laptop, which has Vista installed. When I am at the Toshiba shop in Siam Paragon or at the Subway/NY Deli shop on Silom Road, the Toshiba has no trouble connecting with wi-fi to internet. The building I live in has wi-fi in the lobby, but my Toshiba just will not connect to the internet when I am using it in the lobby. Other users with a Vaio or a BenQ in the lobby are all connected using wi-fi, and I can't for the life of me figure out what's different on my Toshiba when in the lobby. The other users have also taken a look at my Toshiba but still unsuccessful at connecting. One of the users was even an IT professor at a local university.

Anyone else with a Toshiba laptop have a similar problem and can give me an idea what I might do? The Toshiba shop guys say nothing is wrong with the computer, because it connects in their shop, and of course I can't get one of the staff to come to my building to help me.

I have done a zero restart, FN-8 key, made sure the remote switch is on, cleared out all the other wi-fi icons, etc., but all to no avail.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Your laptop wireless card has probably an INTEL chipset. If so try to install the latest software available from the Intel website.

Included is a diagnostics tool that will narrow down your problem(s).

The software is named : PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility

This URL is a good start (provided you have an Intel wireless card) www intel com = support = wireless = wlan = sb = CS-010623.htm

Kind regards,

Leo.

PS i am not allowed to post an URL :o
