A few years ago I flew into Nan. As we approached many in the plane gasped at what appeared to be a rather stunning hilltop temple. It turned out not to be either of the ones easily reached from town...a little further out. Any ideas what temple it may have been?

Nope, this place was far more impressive. The one you pictured...been there. Pleasant temple with some odd statues on the walk up the hill.
