If shopping in Tops make sure you have a Spot card, easy & free to get form their service counter, as price reductions with the card make many things comparable in price to those at Big C & Lotus. Occasionally imported items go on a two for one basis as they cannot sell due to high price, akin to what they do in Marks & Spencers sometimes. Lady Pie pies in Tops are normally priced much higher than Villa so like anything it pays to shop around. For basic foodstuffs & everyday household items I get from Big C or Lotus. I have only been to Villa once but to me it seems to have a better range of imported products than Tops. I would love to shop at Villa more often but finances preclude this.

I was at Villa yesterday about 11.00. I was the only shopper ... :o

Were the shelves well stocked? I must admit recently I have observed in both Homeworks & Home Pro Chalong excessively more staff than shoppers & the realtively new "The Future" looks destined to go the same way as Courts. Big C & Lotus still look very busy most times but cannot comment on Carrefour as I rarely go there.

Villa well stocked, same dismal bread counter. Seems less staff, not sure...

Just back from Carrefour (for bread). Very busy as ever. Biggest problem is lack of check-out counters, and the fact that is little space to queue as the isle ends are too close to the check-outs, and queuing customers block the way from other customers. Really really stupid layout in that area of the shop.

W

BUT: wheres my VEGEMITE and where are my "Villis" PIES (only ladypies and I can get them anywhere here).

When i went there was both vegemite and marmite it was on the 2nd or 3rd row in closer to the home pro side of the shop and if HP is at your back it's on the right hand side at about eye level

I would love to shop at Villa more often but the knowledge that I am being ripped off precludes this. :D

Ripped off ... that's a strong term. I agree that almost all the everyday items are more expensive than I can buy elsewhere, so I choose not to buy. On the other hand, there are many items I cannot buy elsewhere and I am prepared to pay a premium price. That is my choice, and I don't feel 'ripped off' as I pick and choose what I buy in Villa.... :o For me it would be a sad loss if Villa closed through lack of trade.

Well I like both Tops and Villa Market and shall shop at both.

Be careful with the Tops Spot card. Picked up a leaflet for that and, in the small print, say they will pass on ALL your details (that's address, phone, mobiles, any other info) to whoever they may choose if they feel like it. Didn't see any opt out box. Mmmm not for me, thanks.

Thanks for your warning!

We have one "membership" card(in my wife's name). Now I understand the many phone calls she gets from different companies who are offering all kind of services.

But sometimes you can save some money for special products with that card in TOPS.

Yes, it was a little harsh! :D (I was just trying to make a joke following on from Valentine's post. :o )

I hope it prospers too - the more farang food shops the better. But what we really need is more competition. Hopefully another enterprise will see the prices Villa are charging and may stock the same goods at a more competitive price.

Hmmm... I remember the days before SuperCheap/Lotus/Big C/Makro/Central TOPS/Carrefour/Villa. That's the order they opened.

What did we have before that .... few supermarkets in the basement of Ocean (Patong) & Robinson (Phuket Town), the Deli in Patong, Don's old shop in Rawai.

Aaahhh ... bring on more new specialist food shops.

Strange - I've had a Tops card for years (and Robinsons, Makro and Se-Ed) and don't recall ever getting any unsolicited mail or calls, other than a few wrong numbers - the sort where you hear something in Thai, so reply "Poot pasa Angrit dai mai?" (can you speak English) and they usually hang up. :D

You can get some really good discounts with these cards. Sometimes.

Yeah ripped off is a very strong term. Is Villa charging 30% more for cornflakes than Lotus or is it more like 10%? Prices dont seem outrageous to me. Some very reasonable - the imported meats are priced below Emporium (I think) and the quality is very high. To me buying a lamb chop from Tops is a rip off at any price as they are inedible.

A 5% discount loyalty card for locals might be worth consideration.

Still no walnut oil. And how about truffle oil?

The question is how many people would buy walnut or truffle oil???

I would buy walnut oil if the price was right :o

I would also buy fenugreek seeds if I could find them. Both times I've been in, no sign of them. I guess someone has cleared them out. Someone's cleared out the Colemans Mustard too (the jars, not the dried stuff in tins).

Ah! So you're the one who bought the 299 baht loaf! :D

I went again today - not to buy, just to check prices.

100 bags Lipton's Tea in Tops, Central - 179 baht (special offer)

In Villa - 221 baht. :o

Hi

Rye bread was 75.00, white bread was 74.00 mot quite 299.00

Bread was from the Swedish baker, nice for me i like Scandinavian bread.

The 299 baht loaf was on the right side of the bread display. I'll check the exact name the next time I'm there.

Generally a good store, and hopefully will improve over the next few months. Big plus for me is the number of shop assistants available, and their helpful manner. It's certainly removed my custom from Tops. Minus point is the location of the ATM machine around the side of the building.
