junkofdavid2 Posted March 2, 2009 Share Posted March 2, 2009 (edited) It's true that many mechanics/shops/maintenance experts recommend changing a tire after as low as 3 years after manufacturing-date. (Which is a good conservative practice). However, based on statistics, the accident numbers actually begin to significantly increase at the 6 year mark. Scroll to the bottom of this page to watch the MSNBC video feature on tire "expiration": http://www.mylittleportal.com/tire-manufacture-date-aging Maybe the 3 year "expiration" takes into account the fact that a person may use the tire for another 3 years after date of purchase... total of 6 years? .
