Actually, it is not to bad, even though Jungceylon ist not yet finished on the pictures. At least, the resolution is quite good all around.

Wasn't that long ago that it was a complete blur. Live maps is still completely useless. Have a look at live maps map of Bangkok and it's ancient!

Many parts of Google Earth do not seem to have been updated for a few years. Don't know what their update schedule is, but for places like Phuket, a lot of changes occur in a relatively short time.

I don't think it's a scheduled thing. They just buy commercially available satellite photos. Occasionally, they pay someone to fly a plane over a city and take higher res pics. See Sydney for example.

If you zoom down and look along the coastline especially up near Khao Lak it's from just a few weeks after the tsunami and you can see trees lying on the beaches and smashed up buildings.

Bandah Aceh as well.

The latest version has a timeline widget in it - fairly useless at the moment, but as they build up an archive over the years, it should prove popular. You focus on a location, set the between dates and the speed of the display and it shows a slide show of the changes. Interesting.

It will be gtreat if Google Maps make available the street picture maps where you can drive along streets and stop, look at 360 deg pics of ya own house like here in NZ.

Be great here in Phuket to show ya favourite bars etc.

I love it, no just looking for street numbers, ya have a pic of the places ya wanna go to, print it out, take with you.

Good onya Google.

Yes, they're clever little Vegemites, those Google people...

I'm really impressed at the detail in this web site. Excellent.

Yes - thanks for the link.

Yes, that is cool. Pictures in Rawai near my house appear to be at least a year old, maybe a year and a half.

Thanks.

Looks like they was taken a little while after the tsunami to me. As I am sure I noticed a fallen tree on the beach road in Patong, Might be wrong though.

Great site. Thanks for the link.

Syl.

OH MY GOD!!! thanks so much for posting that link. Been to phuket several times (last time i stayed for 3 months in kathu) but now im home and hitting reality, working full time back in aus, its great to have this....thanks again!

Patong is much nicer in photos than in real life. They need an audio loop of people trying to sell you stuff to add realism.

Just zoom in on a tailor shop and use your imagination...
