February 22, 200917 yr Can this be done and does the wedding have any legal status either in Thailand or overseas. ?
February 22, 200917 yr we just did a traditional wedding ceremony with monks for an american couple who is staying at my house. As for thais, those ceremonies don't have any legal status, they are just a celebration of the marriage signed at the office.
February 22, 200917 yr Unless they get freedom to marry documents from their embassy & attend or have a registrar attend & sign the proper documents then the ceremony is just a blessing. Not legally binding.
February 23, 200917 yr Info about marriage registraion at a Amphoe (district office ) can be found here. http://www.dopa.go.th/English/servi/marry.htm
February 23, 200917 yr It is great way to get married, but has no legal status. The legal part is at the local Amphur office.

February 24, 200917 yr Trying to think of a reason why 2 foreigners want to have a Buddhist ceremony. Unless one, or both are Buddhists of course. Would this be for some kind of romantic aspect? How much will 2 foreigners actually understand about the ceremony? For the Buddhists, this is a serious thing. Not a romantic play thing.

There is nothing wrong to be blessed by monks, no matter a religious affiliation. Can be in Wat or outside.

There is nothing wrong to be blessed by monks, no matter a religious affiliation. Can be in Wat or outside. Didnt say it was wrong. Just trying to figure out why, if not Buddhists. Could as well be blessed by drunken sailors. No real difference, if one is not a Buddhist. Huge difference if one is a Buddhist.
February 25, 200917 yr not sure why my guests wanted to marry in a buddhist ceremony, certainly they are not budhists. the rites were explained to them and they following all wedding procedures. for a price less than a bride's tiara in the usa, they had a half day ceremony and nice memories for the future, monks had money and food, all my extended family and neighbours had food and drink. Everybody was happy and enjoyed themselves. It was more of a cultural experience, than a religious one, as both of them are atheists.
February 25, 200917 yr londonthai, Thank you for helping me to explain to Travel2003 the "real difference" between the blessing by "drunken sailors" and the Thai wedding ceremony. Some people sometimes have difficulties to figure this out by themselves. Or they just think too much. Edited February 25, 200917 yr by Condo_bk
