I have been in Thailand a few months now, out in the north - there dont seem to be any birds! Hardly any pedgeons, or any birds at all really. Even on the islands, i cant say i saw any seaguls

Looking from the air most of the north is covered by jungle and is a large part of the country - i am surprised there are so few birds. Ot occured to me that the Thais would eat them, but how many birds could they eat? Just an observation!

They did eat rather a lot of them before. But it is now illegal to do so, from what I gather.

I see plenty of birds around both large and small in town and within a few kms of town also.

My family maintains a home within a National Forest, one of many highland villages grandfathered in upon the establishment of the forestry boundaries, and your observation is correct, large areas of the forested land have relatively few birds or mammals left. Only the insects and the smaller reptiles have survived the increased human populations. And even some of the insect species, specifically beetles, that were once common are now rarely seen. But the situation is not all that different from North America or Western Europe.

I lived in North Bangkok for quite a few years, very few birds up there.

Now in West Bangkok, loads of them, esp <deleted>' pigeons in pest proportions.

You can have any number of the rats with wings.

Would you like them dead or alive? :D

I've never seen a seagull in Thailand.

Birdsong / dawn chorus, out here, is nice. :o

I think you're right that they ate them and just about anything else that moved except, unfortunately, the <deleted> dogs - one of the big plusses in Cambodia is the lack of dogs lying about all over the place.

Only birds I see in South Pattaya are a few mynahs and the herons which are currently gazing longingly at my (netted) koi pond.
