Phuket Needs More Sustainability to Become a World Class Destination.

Phuket Needs:

1: Having a beautiful and undeteriorated destination.

2: Having and maintaining the unique Thai customs and culture to worldwide tourists.

3: Having an unpolluted environment.

4: Having safe from crimes, accident and sanitary.

5: Having enough infrastructures and facilities to offer good quality standards .

6: Having a good transportation system.

7: Having a worldwide telecommunication system.

Recommendations:

Phuket has a very low average compatibility with the aspirations of sustainable development and should be improved.

The government should give powers to localities for the purpose of independence and self judgment of local affairs without corruption or compromise. Phuket should promote and encourage public participation in the preservation and protection of the quality of the environment in accordance with the persistent development principle, as well as the control and elimination of pollution affecting public sanitary situations for quality of life.

Fat cat tour operators and hoteliers should pay more taxes that should go back towards the upkeep and protection of Phukets environment and infrastructure.

It is imperative to adopt a controlled growth construction strategy for tourism development.

Maybe Phuket has gone past the point of return!

Please feel free to add your views or more recommendations.

Im afraid Phuket or should I say Patong as that is the Hub fot Phuket has had its last chance a long time ago. There has been many many postings on this in the past, yet Either the Mayor or the Head of Touris'm has ignored and not listened to the people who know I'e people like me. Yes I am a visitor for only a short period but I spend my hard earned cash when im there. This is what I expect from a destination who's purpose is to give people like me pleasure for 2 weeks.

1 A safe clean Enviroment.

2 A place where I am not Scammed at every opportunity.

3 A place I can travel about without the risk of being mugged.

4 A place I am not charged more because i am a tourist.

5 A Hotel where my belongings will not be stolen by staff.

6 A Country where Iam welcomed and "not as a potential Target".

7 And finally as soon as I pass through customs not to be met by an army of over zealouse people trying to scam me to take me to my desired resort.

These are the things I look for when im ready to throw my cash around. Some might agree some might not, but sadly the above is going on everyday in your belov'd Phuket is it worthy of the crown of the jewel in the Andaman I for 1 do not think so.

Phuket needs less pontificating Farangs.

If that is the case then Phuket should not aim the tourist industry at the farang market, then us farangs wont be so dogmatic towards Phuket.

Try to understand what farangs expect from their holidays in Phuket and stop thinking about what Thais expect from farang tourists.

Open your ears and act, then there will not be any need for pontificating.

Phuket can offer itself as a holiday destination in any shape or form it wants (if indeed there is any overriding plan other than money No.1). If tourists wish to visit once, many times or choose to settle for more lengthy periods then that is up to them depending on whether they like what is on offer - spending a few or many THB does not confer suffrage.

The attitude seems to be 'I am a tourist therefore I know what all tourists want'.

Too often farangs say whats best for Phuket / Thailand when really they mean whats best for themselves.

If its not your taste don't pick it and then moan about the tatse.

What tourists perceive is on offer by way of promotions from holiday magazines, Internet holiday sites, etc. is in most cases not what they expected ounce over here, and tend to push it aside in order to still enjoy their well earned holiday.

I would say a large number of tourists return for one thing only. ( Well not only one thing! ) And almost all expats settle in Phuket for the one thing that they came to Thailand for in the first place. You can take that from an expat who has done the same....... So what, are we still in denial?

What is so wrong about wanting what is best for yourself & your family, as long as your not hurting others in the process.

Thaiwanderer, you are so wrong in your comments, maybe Thailand should have a public health warning on advertisements, like a packet of cigarettes have. If people do not express their opinions, then how would other people know their dislikes and likes. Because you don't agree, you call in moaning.

I have to say, even for you Syl, you have made a decent point.

As I see it, until Phuket enters the realms of reality and the people of importance start to give a shit (and not pocket so much cash), then this island will steadily decline. Even more so with a nice juicy recession.

I do my part by walking as much as I can and by putting my trash in a garbage bin. Positive change starts by example. Instead of pissing on the locals, how about the foreigners consider simple things like not leaving their garbage at the beach, not tossing their ciggie remains all over the place or screaming at people? My Thai friends do use the trash bin and they do try to be responsible, but how do you think they feel when they see some slob tourist leave his crap behind?

Phuket is in large part a reflection of the people it attracts. Short timers come to live fast, party hard and then bugger off. They do this at every resort destination. it is not unique to Thailand.

You want change? Then start with your own life. The rest will fall into place.

Very nicely put. So its farangs that litter up Phuket.

That's the best laugh I have had today, :o open your eyes to the type of rubbish that litters Phuket.

From: Usually behind the dog. Why tell everybody about your fornication habits with K 9s. Are you some sort of sicko or what? :D

Or is it you only shoot your mouth off while standing behind your dog? :D

You started it, not me. :D

I'm sorry to say it, but this makes me laugh. If your Thai friends use trash bins, they belong to a very small percentage of Thais.

In 9 years of living in Thailand, the blantant tossing of litter by Thais is something that has always driven me up the wall. I've never seen people who are so disrespectful and abusive toward their own country. On the other hand, it's foreigners who we see walikng down the street or beach with their bit of trash in hand, waiting to find a proper receptacle.

The higher you ride on your horse, the more it'll hurt when you fall off.

I have been coming here 10 years now...it had too much building In Pa tong then...but still some pleasant greenery,

The whole place has been trashed with excessive building commercialism...brought on by greed and corruption. It's beyond redemption as you cannot change Thai attitude...nor even try to if you enjoy living.

This trend was entrenched in Patayya years ago and is manifesting in the other beach resort locations.

With this and the economic credit crunch besetting Thailand...there in for a big fall...and it will be good to see the greedy stupid one..far rang and Thai get burned...BIG TIME.

Do you walk as much as possible? Do you put trash in its place? Where do you toss your ciggie butts when you are outside? Do you use paper plates and toilet tissue for a napkin? I use dishes that I wash and a cloth napkin. It's little things like that.

As for your disturbed comment about my walking arrangement with the dogs, it is due to their exuberance when we do walkies. I also happen to stoop and scoop when they leave a present. I am not the only person that does that.

As I said, if people want to beat up on the Thais, start with yourselves first and modify your own behaviours. I take my evening constitutional on Patong beach and at the end of the day I see those scurvy beachboys collecting their garbage and beer bottles. I see far too many tourists leaving their bottles and leftovers behind.

Patong is a tourist town and the tourists out number the locals on beach road, on Bangla and on the beach. It is the tourists, the foreigners, that leave the garbage behind. it is the foreigner that leaves his left over McD and BK wrappers all over the place. It is the foreigner that tosses his starbucks coffee cup onto the soi. (How many locals do you see walking around with a Starbucks coffee?) It is the foreigner that walks down Bangla guzzling his beer only to leave it on the curb when it is empty. There are a few garbage sacks available but I have rarely seen a foreigner put the bottle in one. Yes the Thais are litterbugs, but how do you expect to impress upon them the importance of the subject when it is foreigners that are tossing garbage all over the place? Lead by example, not by finger pointing.

It is good that you underlined my point. Maybe next time you will think before you type. Try to put your own life in working order before you take on the job of telling the locals how to run theirs.

And seriously, the reference to carnal relations with a dog? You really are one disturbed individual. Very disturbed. You shouldn't project your fantasies onto others.

Well I don't make the mistake of calling someone else's opinion wrong as you do. Opinions are like a**holes - everyone has one but that doesn't mean they HAVE to be aired / respected. That goes for mine aswell as yours.

I respect your wish to voice you opinion but I am not so arrogant as you to expect that it has to count for anything.

Phuket is well aware of all the bad things you and others perceive. Should they be changed? Well its not your decision is it? Its called self determination and sovereignty. You can tell someone they are going to shoot themselves in their foot but it is none of your business whether they end up doing it or not. It ain't your foot.

Quite an angry rant there.

Its not farang greed its the arrogance that you know better. The attitude that 'I am a tourist, I therefore represent all tourists and all the money tourism generates' - you are not.

Phuket can sustain itself quite well without farangs in the unlikely event that they all stop coming tommorow. Sure, the amount of workers here could not be sustained - but they only came for the tourist work anyway so thats no problem.

As to your rice comment. Firstly, perhaps you should learn more about the history of Phuket before you make assumptions as to how Phuket survived long before tourists and can do long after. Secondly, that comment betrays your crusade mentality of bringing 'light' to the backward people of Phuket.

This forum is for the use of people to air their concerns and seek out more information of Phukets offerings.

I would expect you of all people would understand Phukets needs, but it seems that I was wrong on that score.

Phuket might be aware of what's happening around them, but it is people like you that criticise the changes needed that holds Phuket back.

I am glade that you are happy with your existence here on Phuket, as I was once.

Stop comparing phuket and people with ass-holes a feet, and look more at Phuket with an open mind, and stop being so melodramatic. :o
